• Help my company be more environmentally friendly

Please keep in mind this is all local to the UK. I'm trying to get my company into more environmentally friendly practices. From cups to... Food even. Post any ideas you have for me and my team to propose to management that are realistic to make a difference!
Dunno what the property is like, but if you have any kind of yard/grassy areas, planting native plants is a great way to add in important habitat for insects and birds and such.
Yeah sorry, typing it up on my phone. We're an insurance company (obvs I don't own it, I barely know what a P45 is). It's more or less general office stuff, we have coffee machines with non recyclable cups and what not. We've got some ideas which I can type up at home if that helps, but really any general ideas you lot have would help. If you still need more info I'll draft it up in a wee bit.
Just re-use each other's cups. Don't waste water washing them between uses either. Sharing is caring. ❤
Well you'll need to put some money into it one way or another. One thing you can easily undertake is replacing flourescent lights with LED lights. That technically creates waste I guess but your power usage will be severely decreased. Since I've gone through that successfully, key points for that: Don't buy anything too cheap (probably avoid looking at anything under 3€ for bulk ordering) Stick to a name brand if you can 3 year warranty is a good point to look for This depends on the amount of lamps and their sizes, but we replaced 1200€ worth of mostly 150cm lights and they'll pay for themselves just in energy savings in 1 year. (you'll need to look into energy pricing in a lot more detail for a clear number though) Saving on paper is also a pretty cheap improvement, but it's hard to actually pull off since it requires active employee participation and that might not be very effective. And considering it's an insurance company I imagine you can't exactly just easily recycle paper without shredding them either in house or professionally. But most printers also have a "toner saving" mode you could look into, that will reduce your toner usage. If we further explore power saving stuff, there's also heating costs and I'd imagine you have AC as well. You can save electricity by just setting the target temperature just one degree higher in summer for example or cooling by just opening the windows in the morning when it's still cold out. Enabling power saving modes on rarely used machines or on computers that don't need performance is an extra thing that can help drop ambient temperature. Though if we're going into that, you're also looking at building/window insulation and that's already a bigger investment you're looking into. Frankly, unless your company has some funds willing to set aside, you won't get more environmentally friendly without economic incentives anyway. Just investigate usage of consumables - papers, pens, toner, those sort of things and see how they're used and if they could be used less.
LED bulbs, maybr a dimmer setting depending on lighting. Power saving mode for computers, turn off at night Recyclable cups, lids, everything. You'll need to encourage your employees to give a crap, present a fun meeting and make signs around every point recyclable items to remind people. Plant a tree.
Carpooling, for the people who drive to work.
Off the AC it's one of the most energy consuming product. Remove computers and give everyone a typewriter Teach every staff how to make kimchi. Koreans eat it to survive winter, and they make large quantities to make it last. It also doesn't spoil cause its fermented. Remove electronic calculators, use Chinese calculators Recycle pee into clean water by using water filtrations No plastic, everyone brings their own metal bowls or bottles, failure to do so will get you fired No lifts, everyone take the stairs. Also saves money
it'll be easy to convince the office to do things that save money as well as reduce the carbon footprint. stuff like switching to LED lighting or turning off the computers at the end of the work day.
Obviously won't work for everyone, but we host beehives on our roof
