https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-to-order-additional-forces-to-middle-east/ President Trump is ordering more troops to the Middle East as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to rise. The U.S. will also send more Patriot missile batteries and other force protection systems, and will be designed for the long-haul confrontation with Iran, CBS News' David Martin reports, citing U.S. officials. The move follows Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan's denial of reports Thursday that between 5,000 to 10,000 U.S. troops could be sent to the region to defend against the potential threat by Iran. President Trump confirmed that the number was "about 1,500 people" before departing to Japan. Congressional aides confirm to CBS News that Congress was previously notified the administration's plans to send troops to the Middle East.  "We want to have protection the Middle East," Mr. Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday. He said he was sending a "relatively small number" of "very talented" people to the region. Martin reports that the move is considered to be a very limited buildup – with about 900 new troops plus 600 who were already in place.   Only last week, Mr. Trump insisted he wasn't considering sending more troops to the Middle East to counter Iran, after the New York Times reported he might. "I think it's fake news, OK?" Trump told reporters while leaving the White House Tuesday. "Now, would I do that? Absolutely. But we have not planned for that. Hopefully we're not going to have to plan for that. If we did that, we would send a hell of a lot more troops than that."
It's actually happening, huh?
He read the Fascist's Cookbook and is scrambling like hell to assemble the ingredients as fast as possible. Ingredients for the Rise of a Successful Fascist Regime: (1) Sense of overbearing National Pride (1) Economy which is Struggling or Failing (1) War against a Looming Foreign Threat that will 'Destroy the Country if not dealt with immediately' (1) Useful Government Apparatus to Investigate and Eliminate Political Rivals (1) Deterioration or Obsolescence of the Necessary Functions of the Original Government Body (1) Political Capture of Military and Judicial Systems Combine and spice with racism, xenophobia, and a pinch of stupid over-simplified catch phrases which are used as a national call-to-arms. Introduce Fire and Let Rise until Original Government is Destroyed and new Fascist Regime assumes power.
1,500 isn't a very large number of troops, was expecting far more.
We'll see if it stays there. Or if it isn't already increasing and Trump is just lying about not sending more or about the numbers he's sent.
You forgot right wing propaganda from news and radio shows supporting and propping up their leaders constantly no matter what for years.
Certainly, though I'd agree that's more necessary to maintain an existing regime than to establish one.
I don't think he physically could send a hundred thousand troops without anyone actually noticing. They can not notify Congress or the press, but someone would say something about it and word will get out.
A really good friend of mine is going with the 1,500 there. Hopefully shit don't pop off and he gets himself hurt.
My concern is that the word will get out and Trump will say 'fake news' and, just like that, his cultists will believe it.
I think Trump's ego is too large for him to deny sending troops somewhere quietly en mass. And if it is, it definitely is too large for him to continue to deny it after the fact gets out.
wait for cnn to cover it.
We need more dead bodies to memorialize for Memorial Day. Heil Trump.
But remember, Warhawk Hillary would have sent us into WW3 with Russia!!!
Why bring her up at all at this point? Her stance on russia and syria in 2016 was shit anyway, and speculating on her potential performance three years later is an excercise in fanfiction.
Because a major Trump talking point was that he would be non-interventionist while Hillary would jump at the chance to go to war. Boy who saw it coming, Trump's no different with Bolton whispering in his ear.
That's exactly what it looked like back then, he seemed incompetent but not focused on much outside the US. Even people who predicted he would be a shit president in 2016 didn't think he'd have such a shit foreign policy.
From his very first TV ad: "He'll quickly cut the head off of ISIS, and take their oil" [Youtube] Trump was never an isolationist, that was just another projection from desperate supporters As for "no one could've known!" - people could, and did know, they just got shouted down by enlightened centrists who fell for the fearmongering and the gaslighting
not gonna do a damn thing, we have 2-3x that many on the southern border picking their noses and getting sunburnt.
Oh wow lmao, nevermind. I guess I just never noticed his stance on it. I still don't think Hillary is worth bringing up in 2019, although with this context in mind it does make the criticism of her as a warhawk rather funny so I get it now. Have a coin for teaching me something new.
People bring it up as a joke because the GOP keeps bringing it up as a serious talking point "but her emails" etc.
Sure we did.
Reminder that it was only 5 months ago that trump wanted troops out of the middle east. What a fucking shitshow, lmao
I could only hope that this is an effort to maintain stability, which is incredibly necessary, rather get us involved in another conflict.
