A House Republican lawmaker blocked a $19.1 billion disaster aid package on Friday, delaying a bill that would send federal funding to disaster-affected areas across the country.
Roy said he was objecting to the bill because it would add to the country’s debt, as well as because it left out $4.4 billion in additional spending for federal operations along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Roy’s objection to the disaster aid bill further delays legislation that would send assistance to victims of Western wildfires, Midwestern flooding and hurricanes that hit the Southeast and Puerto Rico, as well as to other disaster-affected areas across the country.
Also, the coward couldn't face a full room while doing it:
“This is a bill that includes nothing to address the clear national emergency and humanitarian crisis we face at our southern border,” Roy said in a near-empty House chamber, adding: “We’ve got emergency requests right now from the administration.”
Is he referring to The Wall™? Or is there some other crisis at the southern border?
if he's referring to the concentration camps on the border he and his party are complicit in creating then sure let's talk about that
I'm amazed the degenerate had the stones to call the southern border thing a 'humanitarian crisis'when it was a crisis caused by him, his party, and the worm in the oval office.
Nevermind the fact that California is on fire, Louisiana is going the way of denmark and the Midwest is underwater there are BROWN people who speak A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE than us that rarely cross one of the most hostile borderlands illegally!
Ya you wonder what level of destruction it'd take for the country truly to have a crisis with climate change. The republicans aren't completely ignorant, they hear the rumblings from the people there, they see the cracks in their wall of lies, they just keep pushing on ignoring everything because it hasn't cost them yet
a human tide of brown people rushing for the border might be considered a humanitarian crisis for white american evangelist christians. Funny thing is, I honestly believe they might actually start blaming climate change for a mass exodus at that point, if they won't put it squarely on Obama's shoulders again.
The room wasn’t full because most of Congress left for recess on Thursday. Not entirely sure of procedures in US Congress, but a single member can probably block a bill in such a case by demanding that a quorum be present. Or something like that. Someone please correct me, if I am wrong.
But anyways, virtually every legislative chamber around the world is only ever ‘full’ for a few minutes during particularly important votes, or eg Question Time or PMQs in Westminster parliaments. It’s romantic to imagine that a legislative chamber always has all of its members present at every passing moment, but members are often very busy people with other, competing obligations.
nowhere in the debate (using the term loosely) about the southern border has global warming been taken seriously by the right, nor has the history of the US funding the deathsquads down there, or the fact that we know from Reagan's own papers that they instigated a mass exedous from down there and used the ensuing tide of people to enact strict border control measures and win elections.
if they are to be believed the right has absolutely no fucking idea what's going on down there and we can only start investigating after we've built The Wall(tm) and 'secured ourselves'
as in, it would be considered a humanitarian crisis for them, not the refugees attempting to cross the border, because they're all so worried about the so-called great replacement.
Tbf this desert is always on fire.
Chip here won by two points in 2018 but acts like he's in a solid red district.
Why can one asshole have total power to outright block entire laws? And the "adding to the debt" excuse can fuck off, they never pull that shit when it comes to virtually infinite military funding.
As I said, I’m not familiar with the procedures in US Congress, but most of Congress left for recess on Thursday. So I believe what happened is when this thing went to a vote, the member demanded of the Speaker that a quorum be present before they proceed with the vote (as they are within their rights to demand). And a quorum probably wasn’t present.
Uh, what does this mean?
either their new healthcare program is a slippery slope to socialism or he might mean their state is going to sink into the ocean (which is happening at thousands of acres a year)
Politicians such as this who won't stand down should be put down, with force if need be.
Honestly depending on who’s in charge or how corrupt the chair is, they can basically do whatever they want like passing a measure with a voice only vote at midnight despite the majority of people voting “nay”.
