Asking about launch options such as -force-glcore to fix game crashes
19 replies, posted
hello and good evening. i will start by asking if there is an ETA about "-force-glcore" being useful once again. some of us have this weird crashes which is probably some kind of ram problem(talked to the support team a few times) and the launch option i mentioned above actually solved the problem and we had no issue playing the game anymore but after one of the game engine updates if i remember correctly, the launch option was not usable anymore and if you put the "-force-glcore" in the launch options, the game wont even run.
details about the crash: my screen stops moving as if the game crashed but i can still hear my footsteps and everything else i do in the game, for example if i shoot my gun, i can hear it actually shooting but the screen is not moving, and after a short time the game just closes.
also, i wanted to ask about some other launch options(if there's any) that might actually help me play the game. thank you very much for your times in advance!
-My Drivers and windows are up to date
-i have 16gb of ddr3 ram and have set up a fair amount of virtual ram
-i have diagnosed my memory and there is nothing wrong with it
Have you verified game files or reinstalled recently?
Stop forcing weird unsupported launch options. OpenGL support for Rust is officially deprecated, as the Windows build focuses on DirectX and the Linux and Mac builds have replaced the old, outdated OpenGL with Vulkan and Metal support, respectively.
OpenGL shouldn't be used now, so of course trying to force it makes the game crash. Take that option out and properly diagnose what's wrong with your machine. You shouldn't have to put in weird settings.
Yes i have verified the game files and i did reinstall the game.
the topic about the opengl launch option that im talking about is an old one, one of the mods/devs in the this forum suggested that i should try that launch option(about a year ago?) and i did which solved the problem. and obviously im not using it anymore since it doesn't even work, and that's why im trying to find a solution. i have talked to the support team about this problem and i have diagnosed every part they asked me to do, and there is nothing wrong with my hardware. all i know is that "the game cannot access the memory" or something like that.
I didn't say there's anything wrong with your hardware, but your computer is evidently doing something strange instead of running Rust properly, whether that is a hardware problem, a software problem, a combination of the two, or just Rust triggering some extremely obscure bug on your exact specific system setup for some unlucky reason. That is what I am saying when I say "something is wrong with your machine". If there was nothing wrong Rust would run just fine.
About a year ago, OpenGL was still supported, but after the Vulkan/Metal release a couple months back OpenGL support was removed entirely.
i completely understand what you are saying and i tried everything i could trying to fix the problem but it seems like im out of luck.
What are your Windows virtual memory settings? And what is your CPU and GPU?
i have a GTX 760 Graphic card and Intel Corei7-4790k Cpu.
and this is my virtual memory settings:

Try setting both the minimum and the maximum to 24576, click Set, then Ok, then restart and try Rust again.
thanks for your response, i tried that and still have the same crash problem.
Does this happen on every server you play on?
Yes every server.
this is the event viewer error report:

I want you to do two things:
First, open a command prompt as administrator and then run the following command:
sfc /scannow
Then go to c:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Rust\_CommonRedist\DirectX\Jun2010\ and run DXSETUP.exe as administrator.
once again, thanks for your response elix, i really appreciate it.
done the first step and the result is:
Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.17763.529]
(c) 2018 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

for the second step, i did not find a folder named "_CommonRedist" in my rust folder, however i searched another folder related to another game, found the directx folder and reinstalled it. and the date on the folder was "jun2010" so i assume that's the latest one.
Did you find any folder with "Redist" in it inside the Rust folder? If it's in another game, that isn't necessarily what we want.
No there is no folder named "redist" inside of my rust folder. everything in my rust folder will be visible in the image below:
https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/146158/bbaea2da-a8f6-44f0-9570-1c4e3b3f0646/8888.png
Thank you. Please verify your Rust install and check the folder again.
Also, hmm, are you running Windows 10? The reason I ask is because the crash log indicates an error that very often is related to DirectX 11 being corrupt in some little file or something, and running the redistributable typically fixes the issue. However, in Windows 10, DirectX is handled differently and redists may not matter.
verified the game files just now and it seems like everything is in place(this is what steam said at least). but i still can't find the "redist" folder in my rust folder.
Yes i am running windows 10. i don't know if it helps or not, but i also re-installed a fresh version of windows months ago just to see if it helps with my rust crashes but had no luck.
Turn the graphics quality down and make sure you are not running programs that hog lots of memory, such as browsers. Your computer is not terrible but it's getting a bit old and it's getting close to the minimum system requirements, so I'm wondering if it's a resource issue.
i have tested the game last night on super potato quality and lowered some of other options in the settings as much as possible, closed all the background apps/Browser/etc and it didn't help.
i have been wondering about that for a while now, the problem might be my old hardware at some point or another. rust is literally the only game my system has a problem with, and it's not surprising to be honest, since rust a memory hungry game.
anyway, thanks for trying to help me with this i really appreciate it. please let me know if there's anything else that might help me solve/track down the problem.
