in all seriousness though, gamers get extraordinarily emotional about this sort of thing
TBH it's pretty dumb that the WHO would focus on video games when say, phones appear to have similar addictive properties. Heck, TV does as well, and it has been existing for far longer.
It would at least make more sense if they classified screens as a whole as being addictive.
Why do people seem to focus on Gaming like this? Can they go for the fucking Developers pulling shady bullshit instead, or the actual gambling in so many games? The predatory practices taking place towards children?
"Gaming disorder", fuck off, I'm never going to acknowledge this until people acknowledge the actual things wrong in gaming.
Something that I don't get is why "Gaming addiction" is different to let's say "Twitter addictions", "Social Media addiction", "Netflix addiction", etc. What makes "Gaming" so special that requires to be recognized as a different kind of illness?
I don't get why its not just recognised as Digital Addition or Electronic Entertainment/Media Addiction that can blanket cover everything from TV to Social Media.
cool, so now amazon is making their workers sick
Because idiots are trying to blame gaming, yet again, for some of the issues in society.
Y'all have such a chip on your shoulders
TV and film don't quite have the same feedback loops that games do that can aid in generating addictions to be fair. A good cliffhanger or engrossing story might make you not see people, or miss events and deadlines for things every so often. But when you compare it to the really hard cases of people who just can't stop playing a game the comparison sorta-kinda falls apart. People who played games to the point of not caring for the children, or to the point of forgetting to eat or drink correctly. I can't say I've seen much of the same happen to TV obsessives because the feedback loops just aren't there.
they targeted GAMERS
Maybe TV/Movies doesn't generate the same kind of addictions as you say, but what about Social Media? Some people are addicted to Twitter/Whatsaap/Instagram/etc to the point that these can modify their behavior and get VERY dependent of them.
Because the pressure to list gaming as a disorder is coming mostly from China where people turn to escapism to ignore the increasingly dystopian hellscape that their government is creating, and we can't have people finding some happiness in video games when there are socialist values to keep up like ratting out your pro-western family members for social credit so you can keep renting that apartment.
Social media definitely has that aspect, and healthcare professionals are genuinely concerned about the impacts of it. It just takes time for things to be recognised by the WHO.
It's quite evident when you read through the thread, the focus here is not what to call it, or what addictions should it encompass, the important thing it's that it's very real, and can be very dangerous, especially to children, so I'm glad it's getting attention. I also hope that it isn't used as a point to drive bullshit propositions by tone-deaf politicians, but it's gonna happen isn't it.
Why is gaming disorder being included in ICD-11?
A decision on inclusion of gaming disorder in ICD-11 is based on reviews of available evidence and reflects a consensus of experts from different disciplines and geographical regions that were involved in the process of technical consultations undertaken by WHO in the process of ICD-11 development.
The inclusion of gaming disorder in ICD-11 follows the development of treatment programmes for people with health conditions identical to those characteristic of gaming disorder in many parts of the world, and will result in the increased attention of health professionals to the risks of development of this disorder and, accordingly, to relevant prevention and treatment measures.
It's not actually exclusive to "gaming" per se, and they're not ignoring other stuff. This is simply to spread awareness of this issue to provoke research and study of it, something both phones and TV have had for a long time.
I'm so mad that I threw my $200 mechanical RGB lit razer keyboard through my $1800 6k television and then smashed my $300 beats by dre over the wall
Phones themselves are really just tools, the thing that people get 'addicted' to is the dopamine loop of social media.
I'd say social media itself is the real thing there.
It'd be insane not to admit there's some unhealthy overuse and addiction cases in gaming, but do they at least acknowledge the therapeutic properties it has on the other side of the coin? I could've sworn they have.
It's also been a pretty useful tool and positive experience for the disabled.
My friend said there should just be one disorder instead of gambling disorder, gaming disorder and all this other shit named "shit nigga simmer down" disorder, symptoms "does too much of this one thing at a time and his family's worried" and I entirely agree with him. I mean fuck I bet someone somewhere likes wearing socks on their hands more than eating and showering
Yeah I got gaming disorder, imma go to a grocery store and get me this motherfuckin check
Yay, everyone loves medical disorders based on hard to define value judgements.
Maybe the "addicts" are just doing the only thing in their life that isn't shitty.
I can see why gaming disorder would be a separate thing than internet addiction or social media - while the particular neural pathways the addictions use may be similar, the reasons why people turn to these mediums to cope, the methods of treatment for each disorder, and the specific diagnostic criteria most likely differ between social media, gaming, gambling, and other psychological addictions.
For example, I'd wager that the demographics differ between the disorders. There are probably more older adults with gambling disorders than those with social media addiction. There are probably more children, teens or young adults with social media or gaming addictions (excluding lootboxes). There may be gender, socioeconomic, or ethnicity differences in the populations with each particular addiction - gambling seems to be more common in lower income environments, and would probably be more prevalent in Las Vegas than Maine. There may be different co-morbid disorders that could affect treatment - autism may be more present in gaming addiction while borderline personality disorder may be more prevalent in social media addiction, and that could affect treatment as those co-morbid disorders would need to be addressed in tandem. The family and social environment can play a role too; the reasons why a daughter with neglectful parents is addicted to checking the likes on all 900 of their daily posts might differ when compared the the lonely senior at the casino playing slots for 19 hours or the NEET in his demanding parent's attic who hasn't showered or left his cave in 3 weeks.
I think a lot of news agencies are sensationalizing the criteria and people are getting defensive because they worry their hobby is being looked at as unnatural. In reality, it's not the person who spends his days off from work and weekends playing video games in his room that doctors are worried about, it's the person who's health and relationships are harmed by their inability to put the controller down and take care of themselves and their responsibilities. The kind of person who basically exists to play video games and cannot function otherwise, who won't leave the home, who won't get schooling or education, who won't socialize.
...If that's describing you, then I highly suggest reaching out for help. I've been there, and therapy turned my life around. A good therapist and a comprehensive treatment plan from people who care and want you to succeed beats trying to go it alone.
