Lol, the dude goes to shut his car off and the officer shouts "Gun!"
Here's a handy tool to help you be black and deal with a police officer:
Comply? -> Get shot
Do not comply? -> Get shot
Video for everyone.

(dunno how to thumbnail, sorry for desktop users)
He didn't just yell "gun", the cop yelled that the man had a gun to his fellow police officers. It's not at all fucking unreasonable that this guy thought he was going to die if he tried to actually shut his car off. It would have been so easy for the officer to use him reaching to shut his car off as an excuse to shoot him and then use the gun in the back as an excuse afterwards, assuming the officer had malicious intent - and for black people who have for so long been mistreated and profiled by cops it hard for them not to assume malicious intent. This situation is so fucked in every way. The officer completely mishandled it whether or not he had malicious intent - and this guy got arrested for it.
I'm very curious as to how long this guy has been an officer.
I don't think it is due to racism or anything sinister. I think it comes from poor communication skills and being inexperienced. I also watched the video and I think that might be the case. I get there is institutional racism out there, I get there are racist people who are cops, I get that.
However, we gotta get away from the narrative that every encounter is due to race. We don't know what happened minutes before he started to record. We don't know the officers background.
If the officer actually saw a gun (The article confirmed it, but tried to downplay it) then the officer didn't do anything out of the ordinary. I want to know what happened before his recording started.
Also are we going to actively ignore the guy egging the cop to shoot him? He said "common, shoot me" several times.
The officer acted very erratically and did nothing to defuse the situation, instead attempting to escalate it even more. Is it so wrong for the guy to assume he's going to get shot at that point, especially when he perceived an action of the officers to be actual malicious intent in an attempt to shoot him? The guy did everything he could to ensure the safety of himself, even if that meant not complying and egging the officer on to try and prevent him from doing so. The truth is no matter what there are bad people in the police force who like to abuse their power over others, especially over minorities that are perceived to be violent despite the fact that one mans skin color has nothing to do with who they are. While I doubt this guy is one of those people unless proven otherwise, and is more likely inexperienced or just incompetent, it still doesn't change the fact it can be hard for people like this guy to trust police officers to be 100% compliant with them, because even compliance can result in them dying, and who wants to die?
I can't wait to hear that after the investigation, the police officer was found to have handled the situation poorly.
His punishment: 2 weeks suspension. Paid.
Lol, even with the gun visible and all he was arrested for loitering and disregarding an official order. Now it's very obvious why the guy is disregarding an official order (because and officer shouts GUN! when he tries to obey), so on what planet is loitering an offense worthy of pointing your gun at someone's face?
Did you watch the video? The officer alerted other officers that there was a gun present.
He wouldn't have yelled that for no reason.
Whether or not this specific incident is because of race (and even if you can't prove it, look how often it happens to black people) it's clearly evidence of the problem with police in America: any minor offense, and you'd better do everything right or else the cop is ready to be judge, jury, and executioner. Or maybe the cop will just shout contradictory orders at you until you fuck up and they shoot you like that guy in Arizona in 2017.
Seems fine to me? Cop saw a gun, called it out then the suspect reached down slowly with BOTH hands out of view of the cop in a car that had steering on the wrong side and the suspect is KNOWN to possess weapons, even if told to turn off the car, why use both hands? Dodgy af even with a phone, pulling your firearm is justified, a gun can be pulled almost as fast as the cop would be able to react in that situation if a suspect was inclined to. Probably would have gone a lot differently if the suspect used his other hand to hold the phone, too. Seems like another overblown case whipped up to be racism, again.
You're the galaxy brain that went "there's literally nothing racist about racial profiling" in another thread about a power-tripping cop targeting minorities, so forgive me (I don't actually care if you do) for not putting any faith in your judgement
The cop says to turn the car off, gun already out
The guy reaches for it with his dominant hand, his right hand
In direct view of the cop
Left hand turns with his body because that's how turning your torso works
THEN the cop calls out the "suspect" has a gun, conveniently right as the guy is trying to comply with the order
Did you even watch the video?
Yeah, not inherently racist. Racism implies a belief of ones superiority or their inferiority, Profiling doesn't even delve into that. But good thing I give zero shits about your judgement either.
Did you watch it? He put both of his hands behind him out of view of the police officer, if you watch traffic stop shootings you'll know it takes half a second for an officer to eat a bullet to the face if he isn't being careful. We don't know much preceding the video or how he acted up until that point. Probably drew the gun for initial non compliance.
Alright so racism is the belief that your race is superior or others are inferior sure, then how is racially profilling not racist then? EIther way you're assuming your race is superior and is less likely to be a criminal or assuming their race is inferior and more likely to be a criminal.
No? Because it's dynamic. If whites started committing more crime on average than their proportional population would suggest, the police would put more proportional focus onto that group, does that mean you're being racist against yourself? Same with Asians, black or anything in between. It doesn't assume they're inferior, or superior it just goes off statistics which in my opinion are more attributed to poverty and socioeconomic factors, skin colour has no relevance beyond just happening to be part of a group.
Make your mind up, are they going after blacks or poor people then in this instance? Or both?
Way to miss the point, it doesn't matter 'why' something happens so much as it does happen.
To answer your question though. In my opinion poverty causes a large amount of crime, a lot of black neighborhoods happen to be mired in poverty, also my opinion, due to actually Racist Jim laws and segregation and actual racism in the past. It's not the police's duty to pull them out of poverty that's the governments, through welfare, education, etcetc. The fact that they focus their effort in high crime area's isn't Racism as everyone seems to want to imply.
You could very easily take that the other way and that the reason he yelled that was so he'd have justification to shoot the guy, which is what the guy thought and so he put his hands out the window in an attempt to not get shot. We don't know the full facts of the case yet so arguing that point is irrelevant. All the article says is that the cops found a gun in the back of the car. Meanwhile this dude yelled out that the guy had a gun while he ordered the man to reach under the steering wheel to turn off his car. No matter what you think that was a fucking terrible way to handle the situation.
Newsflash buddy, racism is used as a catch all term for all forms of racial discrimination, implicit or explicit. Racial profiling is racial discrimination, because even if it's not necessarily because one believes they are superior to another, it's quite literally because of ones skin color that causes a certain in action, in the case a belief an individual is committing a criminal act. Even if you were right, that doesn't change the fact that racial profiling is racial discrimination. Good thing we all agree that's bad-
Oh wait.
Are you seriously arguing that racial profiling is a good and rational thing? The color of ones skin does not determine who they are. Immediately assuming a person is up to something just because of their physical features that they cannot change is just about the most fucking absurd and irrational thing you can possibly do. It's just human tribalism taken to its extremes, and we've been struggling to kill that for centuries and actually think rationally. All racial profiling like this does is lead to more dead innocents because cops can't be careful about doing their job.
One of my best friends is black. He's one of the kindest and nerdiest dudes I've ever met. I was with him as he watched his grandmother died and he told me if he could wish for one thing, it would be so that nobody would ever have to watch their loved ones die in front of them. But because his skin has a little bit more melanin in his skin, I have to worry that some time in the future, whether it's tomorrow or 10 years from now, he stands a legitimate chance of being shot by some jittery rookie who never should have been handed a badge in the first place when he's pulled over for a routine traffic stop. That's fucking terrifying man. If you actually believe that's a right thing, you're actually a piece of shit.
Dude, you can't even realize that the steering wheel is on the right side because the video is mirrored since it's using the selfie camera. He was reaching down to the left of the wheel because that's where his keys are, hand with the phone was in the way so he moved it. The officer had clear sight line on his hands the entire time, and was pointing his own weapon at the man in the car. Stop excusing the cop, he fucked up in handling the situation, and there's no way you can get around it. He could have been using de-escalation techniques such as informing the guy of what he did wrong, calmly explaining to him what to do, and helping the dude out of the car when the dude offered up his hands to prove that he wasn't doing anything, and additionally not arguing with the guy. Cops cannot be verbally confrontational in their job, it will only escalate situations further and probably make them end up in a worse situation.
If ya say so bud.
It's always surreal to see people talking about how the cop has reason to fear for his life, and not spare a single thought for how the guy at the end of the barrel also doesn't want to die
Both of them would prefer to stay alive. But only one of the two people involved A) signed up for a line of work where life-or-death situations are a possibility; B) is supposed to be trained for such situations; and C) has the legal authority to direct what happens in them. Conversely, only one of them is part of a minority group who police around the country are often found to discriminate against, with lethal results.
The cop yells at the guy to shut the car off. The guy in the car, who's untrained, caught in a high-stress situation, with a loaded gun to his face, he has the ~crazy~ idea to... do exactly as the cop says. As soon as he reaches down, the cop yells HE'S GOT A GUN! GUN! and you're gonna tell me you can't see how this dude feels like he's about to be fucking framed?
"Woah slow down racism accusations?? That's way too far! Also I'm gonna question what the man said with literally zero justification and imply there's unseen footage that puts this altercation in a better light for the officer, because THAT'S not presumptuous at all"
