I'm scratching my head on this one. Occasionally, my laptop will just shut itself off, without any rhyme or reason and has done so since I purchased it several years ago. It might happen if I'm playing a game or it might happen if I'm simply watching a youtube video.
Initially, I thought it was an overheating issue but I've ruled that one out since it seems to happen without warning and my temps always stay around 50C or so when I'm not running a game. I think I saw upper 60s, maybe lower 70s when I ran CoreTemp while playing a game...But as I said, it also happens when I'm not playing a game.
Thought that maybe it was my antivirus since it's been occasionally happening since purchase and I've always used the same AV. Switched from Comodo to AVG and things seemed to go fine for about two months...Then it did it again and has a couple times since then. Yesterday it shut down while I was in the middle of working on a word document, nothing major going on in the background, and the Resource Monitor wasn't doing anything crazy. Did it again today when I was in the middle of typing up a chat reply, and again, nothing crazy on the resource monitor or anything going on in the background.
Laptop Specs:
ASUS ROG G750JW
Windows 8.1 (upgraded from 8)
12GB Ram
i7-4700HQ processor
Nvidia Geforce GTX 765m
It hasn't been overclocked or anything of that nature. If extra information is needed that I haven't provided, lemme know and I'll try to dig it up.
Obvious first step after thermal check is to check the power cord, especially if you do not have the battery installed. Install the battery (if its not) and see if it randomly goes to battery when plugged in.
My laptop has this exact problem so I use my battery as an UPS.
Battery is installed and it doesn't go to battery.
The unfortunate thing about about this particular model that I absolutely hate, is that to get to anything beyond the harddrive/ram, the entire thing has to be torn apart. My prior ASUS wasn't like this and allowed easy access. I'd need to get a tool kit since the only things I have right now is magnetized. For the moment, I'll hold off on poking around in the guts.
I probably should have, but at the time of purchase, I was living at home and things were...Not so nice in terms of how my mom was acting towards me. I'm fairly sure she would have taken my head off if I'd brought up issues with the laptop. It also really didn't happen enough to put up any red flags.
