https://edition.cnn.com/2019/05/27/tech/zuckerberg-contempt-canada/index.html A contempt of Canadian parliment hasn't happened since 1913.
"Nobody is going to come with some handcuffs and arrest them, but to be held in contempt by an entire country would not serve any platform well," he added. So nothing will really happen.
Imagining a future where facebook is forced to block itself in Canada Sure, it would be disorienting at first, but I'd love for everyone I know to stop being on it so I could get off of there too
Time to move to Canada
Honestly, Canada would be a better place for it.
It's done a lot of damage but it has helped. I found out my mother was using Facebook to spread lies about me and finally got away from her. Getting out of that toxic environment probably saved my life.
I mean not to humble-brag or soapbox or whatever but Facebook is a cesspool if your friends are cess-pool worthy. Like... Your feed is what your friends share/post. If your friends share and post stupid shit, then you get stupid content on your feed. I've never had a cess-pool experience on Facebook, so am I missing something?
They should face extradition if the contempt vote passes
Zuckerberg pisses me off. Can't stand the sight of his face. I can't wait until Facebook goes the way of MySpace.
It's more of a plague on society than anything else. It's a fitting platform for enabling the spread of propaganda, false information, and fake news - playing a large role in the polarization of our world and placing doubt in truth, science, and the media, and Facebook is also no stranger to being careless if not outright malicious with user information and data. They're scummy and conniving even by corporation standards.
The issue is that Facebook/Youtube/Twitter/Tumblr/Google use algorithms to drag and trap you within intentional bubbles for marketing purposes. You can humble-brag, but its just because you got lucky. It would take just 1 or 2 people to drag that group into hell.
I just tried it out to check how easy it is to get to the really bad stuff. I opened YouTube in an incognito account to get a fresh start on the algorithm. I went through some fox news videos and then checked the homepage, and I already got recommendations for Q-Anon stuff. I doubt I would have to watch Q-Anon content for long until I start getting recommendations from Alt-Right (Nazi) channels.
A medical researcher found that even if you go to pro-vaccine videos, by the third video on autplay you had anti-vacc videos. These places are just designed for the worst thing to push drama and clicks.
^yup same thing with science or politics, it always eventually sends you down towards conspiracy theories, ancient aliens, UFOs alt right nutjobs
You are missing something. Mass social media like Facebook has given every idiot, racist, sexist, whatever, an outlet but more importantly, an echo chamber. Before social media and all these pages they had to meet in person. They didn't really mass congregate. But now they can all group up and circlejerk in the pages and actually cause problems. Trump-sized problems. Anti-vaxx sized problems. That is why social media is a blight. And it's a shame because it was simply the most amazing thing to come out of the internet- the fact that people anywhere could talk, make friends, make relationships, find events, simpler and easier than ever. Not to mention it's collected all our data and led to the most fucking obnoxious advertising programs to date. You can't look anywhere without some kind of fucking ad.
Well, no, your feed is not what your friends share/post, not anymore. Now it's half that, a quarter paid advertising (usually fake ray-bans and penis enlargement ads that keep getting added by bot accounts faster than you can report them) and a quarter "The algorithm thinks you might enjoy this" posts that are actually completely unrelated to anything you've shown interest in before.
