• AssemblerGames to shut down in 30 days

After months of silence and inactivity, the site's administrator has made an announcement: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/113610/34a0982e-ed82-4eb3-bb3c-fa3845f511cc/image.png Here's the original thread For those of you who do not know, AG is a forum about old video game prototypes, rare and vintage hardware, modding, hacking, development, and much much more. It was essentially the goto place for preserving and sharing video game history.
couldn't they start a patreon or something? $2.8k isn't that much money and im sure there's plenty of people who would be happy to chip in to keep the site going
There's gonna be a fucking scramble to archive all this stuff. This is the sort of site that deals with archiving old games consoles and now it's shutting down...
Seems like a very solvable problem, but I get the impression from that thread alone that a lot of people have issues with the current management...
I don't know much about the site but completely taking the site down over something that can easily be fixed with donations is crazy. $120 a month is nothing.
I have a feeling it's not that cut and dried, just like Facepunch being closed.
If he couldn't bother to look for alternative ways to get those $120 a month then there must be more reasons. Same with how he just wrote that little, you would think after 30years there would be more.
The members of AssemblerGames would be braindead to let it die. I've seen the shit those members have, money shouldn't be an issue for them to donate to keep that marvelous site going.
FP closing is completely cut and dry.
Not exactly. AssemblerGames is being shut down against the admin's will since he can't afford to run it anymore while Facepunch is being shut down since Garry's just having a temper tantrum over the fact that he can't really monetize it like he has with Rust
I mean in the sense that at first, we thought it was because of money to keep it going, then it was because he couldn't sell off the site because of privacy laws with the users, and then finally yeah what you said.
Garry wouldn't expend the effort to handle a sale of Facepunch Forums.
Seriously, this guy needs to open a Patreon. YTMND opened one after max fixed the site and now has its monthly server costs fully paid for.
This is all second-hand information, so take it with a grain of salt, but... apparently, the site's own community doesn't want to donate money to keep it afloat, because they have a beef with the owner. And it's completely understandable, given that the owner apparently pulled a garry himself. He disappeared for ages, came back and promised to fix the site, and then disappeared again. God, the only part of this garry hasn't done is make a second re-appearance to announce that the facepunch forums are finally closing in 30 days. Why do founders of video game forums keep pulling this shit?
It's pretty bad, the entire moderation team resigned a while back, lots of rumors about the admin abusing his position over the years, etc. The admin has burned any remaining goodwill with the community already, registrations\password resets have been broken for a good while, sites been a near ghost town for years already. The admin has proven to be untrustworthy with funds already. The issue hasn't really been money, all the decent posters already have alternatives. The issue is solely with the admin. Hiddenpalace does a better job at dealing with betas\prototypes\cancelled stuff. A lot of the good stuff is already gone from AG due to link rot, anyway. I found that out when I did some selective manual backups in Jan. Anyway, not totally unexpected but still a kick in the dick. The community had enough of him anyway, hes been a bit of an absentee turd for the last couple years.
