The president told reporters outside the White House on Thursday morning that he was preparing a “major statement” about the surge. “It will be a statement having to do with the border and having to do with people illegally coming over the border and it will be my biggest statement so far on the border,” Trump said. Trump’s planned threat would follow immediately after the White House sent a draft of its new trade agreement to Congress that, if ratified, would replace the 1994 NAFTA deal. It is not clear if Trump could successfully impose new tariffs under the terms of the USMCA as it awaits congressional approval. The agreement is intended to limit tariffs and trade barriers between the United States, Mexico and Canada.

What if we took all these able bodied people, put them through legal immigration channels, and accepted them as working citizens of the country? While we're there, we could even discover a way to expedite citizenship and legal immigration?

I don't know about that, but illegal immigration in 2017 was at a 46-year low point. Even Trump acknowledges this. All the recent stories about migrant caravans have been from the Northern Triangle; that is, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, which are plagued by violence. Even still, the increased immigration from these countries doesn't account for the drastic decrease in emigration from Mexico.
