The Division 2 sold 10 times more on Uplay after ditching Steam for Epic Store

Ubisoft reported record profitability in its full-year 2018-19 earnings report, with net bookings of more than €2.03 billion ($2.27 billion), in line with its target for the year of around €2.05 billion ($2.3 billion). The company showed particular strength on the PC, with net bookings up nearly 79 percent, accounting for 27 percent of the company's total for the year.
Somewhat surprisingly, The Division 2 fell short of Ubisoft's expectations on console, which Ubisoft attributed in its earnings call to "a more competitive environment than expected." On PC, however, its performance "was in line with the first Division's massive launch," and drove "a huge 10x increase in sales [over The Division 1] on Uplay."
That dramatic increase could be viewed as an indictment of Ubisoft's decision to shift its releases from Steam to the Epic Games Store, but it also reflects the success of Ubisoft's strategy, explained by CEO Yves Guillemot earlier this year, to draw attention to, and increase usage of, its own store. Being on the Epic Store "really helped to actually do more of our business on our own store," he said at the time, noting that Division 2 preorders on Uplay were six times higher than for Division 1.
Yeah never quite understood what Epics endgame was with ubi games. Since you're tied to their launcher anyway, Uplay is just more convenient to buy from t han either EGS or Steam. That plus the rewards system and ubis own games sometimes end up a bit cheaper.
How about taking into factor that it was a good game and looked bombastic on PC.
Hell, I was THINKING of getting it on UPlay since it was not released on Steam.
words I live by
unless steam has a really really good deal (Pretty sure I have only black flag and blood dragon on steam)
When buying a game for uplay though, I typically go through a european official seller, like greenman or something, saves maybe ten bucks
Too bad we don't get exact metrics about how things actually went.
They had the great plan to drive sales to uPlay where they basically get 100% but did that make up for the overall loss of sales?
Some might go for uPlay instead of EGS but you still loose people who don't want to go to uPlay and who are annoyed by Ubisoft ditching Steam.
Hope Epic paid them good so Epic lost money on here with people sidestepping EGS completely.
So basically Ubi's prank on Epic worked
Funny because one of my friends recently sent me a link about a bundle that included headphones and a copy of division 2. do they count?
Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and Wii U—held steady at 2 percent
Okay but this implies there are still people buying Just Dance games for the Wii in 2018/19 and that astounds me
Now that's an epic prank
Probably because they’re still making them. Just Dance 2019 had a Wii release.
I didnt even realize this game is out
Division 2 had a REALLY strong start, and I loved it for the first few weeks, but I fell off hard. They haven't added enough new stuff since launch.
After having my account locked for purchasing too many games on the Epic Store, that store can burn in the fiery abyss and I won't shed one dang tear. Uplay is pretty great, imho, and I will continue to support them as I do Steam. BTW, dealing with Epic CS is a real PITA.
Ubi played Epic like a fiddle
Have to wonder where these people are when it comes to the Steam releases of Ubisoft games honestly. Meaning this 10x influx that wouldn't be there had the game been on Steam.
As stated, either way, you have to use Uplay to play Ubisoft games. The only difference between buying a Ubi game on Uplay and buying it on Steam is you're giving 20% of the profits to Valve.
Still, these are very interesting and pretty conclusive results on the state of EGS. A fair amount of people would rather go out of their way to remember that Uplay is actually a separate client and just buy it through that despite Uplay's already negative stigma than just buy it through EGS.
This sorta means that Ubisoft games are never going to appear in Steam ever again.
It's probably the second-most sensible console to release that on, after anything with Kinect.
(The game fudges the numbers like crazy on 360 at least, but it still works well enough to be very fun.)
I expect to read similar news about the Windows store once The Outerworlds releases too.
Honestly Uplay isn't that bad, although I used the launcher itself so little that I was kind of confused on how to buy Division 2 when I found out it was on sale.
Like, it's strange that their launcher is one of the few without the store embedded in it, and that you have to go online to their website to buy the game. Not a huge deal, but something I'd like to see improved.
Also, as a semi-related note, if any FPers are still playing and were unable to get into the Facepunch clan due to the leader's inactivity, I have created a secondary clan people can use called "Facepunch KO". Send an invite and I'll approve it as soon as I can (or @ me on the FP division discord for a quicker response)
I opted to purchase it directly from uplay when I heard it was on the EGS.
It wasn't even a question for me. Buying from epic is simply not an option I will consider. Ever.
Considering it launched as a finished more complete game than the content empty and buggy mess that was the first game I'm hardly suprised it did considerably better than the first game.

The ammount of mental gymnastics in this is amazing.
Where the price allows, I'd like to get the games upon STEAM simply for the more reliable server speeds. Plus, you get a uPlay copy in the end anyway.
?
They would've just bought it on Steam.
They'd still be there. Just on Steam.
You'd be surprised how long companies will hold onto systems for if they're at or near the top of their generation.
The last PS2 games were launched in 2013, the last SNES games in 2000 (1998 in the west, though), the last Genesis/Master System game in 1998 (Frogger. Not coincidentally, the last game in the west for the SNES, too.) and the last PSP games in 2016 (Likely due to being significantly more powerful than the DS and, unlike the latter, having to deal with a floundering successor.)
same here. i dumped about 42 hours into this game pretty easily then once i got to the endgame and up to world tier 5 i ran out of stuff to do besides farming in the cancerous DZ
now i'm just waiting for a patch because i'm not interested in having my loot be raided
Ubisoft: Lets release it on the epic store so everyone buys it first party from us.
2 forces of malevolence fought each other here, this is great
Launch day TD1 was amazing, everybody was on-mic in the DZ, legit waiting in line was hilarious and everybody was shooting the shit in chat.
I honestly have great memories of the TD1 beta and first few weeks.
I'm fairly certain Wii is still the most popular platform for Just Dance. A lot of non-gamers are still using theirs, unaware of anything that's come after it.
