Nice announcement. That certainly won't bring the bobbies over when they know exactly who's doing it.
Considering that incident last year at Gatwick caused such major disruption (~140,000 passengers affected ~1,000 flights diverted/cancelled) because of perhaps one guy with a drone and the perpetrator was never found, I'd say it's a pretty damn effective technique.
noooo for fuck sake, don't get drones banned
Oh you've got to be KIDDING me. The first time in seven years i try to take a holiday, and these guys pick my EXACT DEPARTURE DATE, at the EXACT AIRPORT I'm using for their first test run. I get that action on climate is needed, I do. But this trip's been one of the few things keeping me going after a hyper-shit year. Gimmie a break, geez.
Great way to gather public support and not just to piss off a load of people.
At this point. Let them Climate Change is a threat to Human Civilization, and it needs all the attention it can acquire.
I understand what they're trying to do, but I don't think disrupting thousands of general people will help their cause, they need to target the massive companies responsible for 70% of emissions.
Talk about the most stupid way to protest climate change.
Was waiting for the next time somebody abuses drones to shut down an airport. Hopefully its not getting more popular because its also pretty easy to do. One year later all airports have high tech anti drone lasers.
TBH I hope they arrest people who make those threats, they're literally endangering aircraft by fucking about with drones and risking a ban.
The government's not going to let them though. And then they'll proceed to crack down on private done ownership nationwide. All this is going to accomplish is screwing over the rest of the people who own drones. There are many other ways to protest this. For god's sake, they could just fucking stand in the way of a runway, or throw barricades up or something. They'll get arrested, of couree.... but they're gonna get arrested for this shit anyway, so they might as well not screw over private ownership of drones while they're at it.
How is this going to cause a slippery slope into private drone ownership being taken away. Like that should be the least of everyone's worries here.
I'm not saying I'm more worried about drone ownership being taken away than I am about climate change. But if this keeps happening, you bet the government is going to crack down on drones. Cause they aren't interested in actually solving the real issue here - certainly not yet. And these stunts aren't going to change their mind, not when so much shit relies on airports still being functional.
Yet the point of these protests is to get the General Public to get angry at this shit. You won't have to worry about Drones getting taken away if everyone is like this https://youtu.be/ZwMVMbmQBug
Dude find somebody with a bigass bird and train it to gank drones. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5DEg2qZzkU
I don't like it and I'd be pissed off as fuck if I was a passenger. But then at the same time, climate change is a danger that's will fuck up the entire planet. I also have a slight feeling this may be a bluff and they're doing this just to show that people get more upset over delayed flights than the planet dying.
Disrupting capital is one of the last effective forms of protest we have bar violence.
Except that's the point of Protest... To Disrupt the normal flow of daily life to bring attention towards grave issues or problems that threaten the future of society.
When the fuck are people going to finally understand that any remotely efficient protest will inconvenience people? That's doubly true when it comes to climate protests, since every single cause of climate change is deeply intertwined with the way our society functions. What do you suggest they do instead? Blockade the banks that help finance dirty industries? No can do, people would complain they can't get to work (head's up, if your boss can legally give you shit for something outside of your control, then protests are the least of your problems and you should be going out in the streets yourself to defend your rights). Shut down a gas power plant? Not a good idea either, as that would raise the price of electricity (and might even cause blackouts if done extensively) and people would take issue with that. Fucking destroy a fracking site? Then gas prices will rise and people will bitch about that. If we're being honest here, the only thing people like you would be fine with is if protesters just picketed silently on the sidewalk, nothing more. Heck, you'd probably complain about them blocking the way of pedestrians. This is probably among the least inconvenient thing they could be doing while remaining efficient. Air traffic isn't exactly critical to keeping the country's infrastructure running, and you can go anywhere in mainland Europe by train. Would you rather they go after gas stations and paralyse the whole country? You should honestly be glad they're targeting the most polluting and frivolous aspects of our lifestyle first.
Not exactly. In America at least you pretty much only ever see marches in the streets and other ineffective protests. We're past the point of raising public awareness. I don't think anyone in the first world at this point isn't aware of climate change, and those the people are hard sold on one stance or the other.
He said "last" effective, not "least" effective though.

As a drone enthusiast I hate every single one of these people.
Yeah, blame the people who are actually doing something to get those in power to do something about the threat of the century, not those who'll use them as a scapegoat to pass stupid anti-RC laws.
You're right. You deserve the right to play with your toys when the world is a desert. Place your hate solely with the government instead.
All this does is make it even worse for drone owners. If the protestors just occupied the runway, or threw trash onto it or whatever it would have the same effect as flying a drone around. The public opinion on drones went to shit after Gatwick, which is to be expected because people's vacations were ruined by a drone. And if you followed the news, people didn't blame the person operating the drone, people blamed drones as a whole. Why protest at the cost of an already sensitive subject such as drones and fuel the public anger on them even more, if there's so many other and easier ways to shut down an airport?
...And then they get instantly kicked out by security, business resumes as usual after a couple hours, and they get heavily sentenced for entering a very restricted area that's probably under additional scrutiny due to anti-terrorist measures. That is, if they even manage to get past security and onto the runway in the first place. Meanwhile the Heathrow drone pilot got the airport shut down for a pretty extensive amount of time and he wasn't even found. I want to know what you're smoking if you genuinely believe that what you suggested or anything you may suggest would be easier than piloting a drone around.
I hope you know that Gatwick was done with a custom built industrial drone that somehow managed to circumvent jammers. Normal consumer direct control 2.4 ghz drones will be taken out by a jammer within minutes, which were installed after Gatwick. The drone fun will last maybe about an hour before everyone will be localized and arrested.
And? A group of protesters can't achieve the same thing somehow? Again, how is that a preferable method to your ridiculous suggestion?
