https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/30/world/asia/north-korea-envoy-execution.html SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea has executed its special envoy to the United States on spying charges, as its leader, Kim Jong-un, has engineered a sweeping purge of the country’s top nuclear negotiators after the breakdown of his second summit meeting with President Trump, a major South Korean daily reported on Friday. Kim Hyok-chol, the envoy, was executed by firing squad in March at the Mirim airfield in a suburb of Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, Chosun Ilbo, South Korea’s largest daily, reported on Friday, citing an anonymous source. Mr. Kim faced the charge that he was “won over by the American imperialists to betray the supreme leader,” the newspaper said. Four officials of the North Korean Foreign Ministry were also executed
I fully expect Trump to frame this as winning.
Jesus fucking Christ.
This is actually horrifying and inhumane.
Not surprising. Petty tyrants aren't renowned for thinking.
fuckin' wild this shit still happens
not that this probably would have happened anyways but given trump's complete inability to give a shit about preparing for anything and his demonstrated ability to sink any dialogue with ridiculous demands, its sad to know people are now dead because of it
The scary part is that Trump would almost certainly do the same if he had the absolute power he often pretends to have.
Well, shit. I expected things to fall apart, but...
The standard cynic in me thinks Kimmy didn't like his own negotiators trying to ease relations or some such and purged them on a whim. The paranoid asshole in me thinks the negotiators were considered witnesses to matters he didn't want leaving the summit, ever.
No, I don't think he will, but I believe he'll tweet about it and mention how great it would be if he could do the same with the Democrats.
Or maybe not.
Yep the right-wing South Korean source has been proved to fabricate news on more than one occasion. Most notably there was this news that Kim Jong Un had gotten his wife executed which of course wasn't true.
This kinda makes it sound like North Korea could selectively be leaking false news to watch for it to appear in South Korea, so that they know they have a leak.
Or that South Korea is no different than the U.S. and fabricates fake news for clicks and shit. Pretty much all the big North Korean stories I see posted on here turn out to be fake after a week or two like the general getting eaten by dogs or the one blown up by mortars. South Korea in all reality does not want reunification as it would tank their entire economy in relief efforts and the idea of the U.S. and North Korea having better relations is a detriment to South Korea as we are heavily invested in them diplomatically so we can keep an eye on NK. North Koreans who escape into the South are also universally mistrusted and disliked by the locals. This leads them to embellish their stories to prove they aren't spies or still loyal to the North in some way. Not shilling for the NK government but you just have to be skeptical on that shit. The geopolitics is more complicated.
How does anyone under his ""leadership"" stand by and empower this clown? His officials must be the most enlightened people in the country insofar how fucking inhuman this ""dynasty"" is. Brainwashing or not you might be worse than your fat dictator if you carry out his orders..
Because Kim is most likely a puppet for the real military leaders behind NK. We cannot even begin to imagine the insane struggles, backstabs, and general politicking that must go on in that fucking place.
Is always par for the course on dictatorships. Sure, you have the visible head giving orders and being respected, but in order to do such the military and oligarchs have to "respect" you. This is why rarely when a dictator gets assassinated without removing the rest of the elite the regime barely have problems.
basically there's a small group of people within NK that he has to seek approval from, think the top brass in the military and powerful people in charge of what industries they have, they're rich by even western standards and they combined control the country and how tightly the leader of NK can hold power through their actual execution of the law and how they keep the order. While its true he can probably have anyone executed any time for any reason, to do so damages his approval with other parts of that circle. So as long as he keeps these people happy and relatively comfortable, he has their approval, and they use him to stay in power since they individually couldn't replace Kim since they don't have his popularity or recognition in the country.
