Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is setting up a commission at the State Department to redefine human rights as based on what the department is describing as "natural law and natural
rights." The move has alarmed human rights activists, especially those focused on LGBT rights and women's rights, who fear it will mean an end to promoting protections for both groups
around the world.
The State Department has declined to comment beyond Pompeo's remarks. But it did issue a public notice in the Federal Register on Thursday that says the body, named the Commission
on Unalienable Rights, will provide Pompeo "advice and recommendations concerning international human rights matters" and meet about once a month.
Use of the term "natural law" has concerned some advocacy groups and department staff, as it is interpreted in this case as "God-given" or religiously-based rights that affect issues like
sexuality, abortion rights, and more. In particular, the phrase has been prominent in the work of Princeton professor Robert George.
George has played a prominent role in the creation of the commission, according to a source familiar with the plans for the commission. George, co-founder of the National Organization
for Marriage, a nonprofit that advocates against same-sex marriage, is among the 15 academics recommended to make up the panel, according to the source.
The commission "is absolutely about those issues, but it's not explicit in the paper," the source said. "It questions whether and which human rights are universal."
Natural law is the idea there there is one universal code of morality that is given to humans by God
That is not always the case in all philosophies regarding natural law.
But it is in the case of these officials, at least.
If FP had any kind of profile text or signatures mine would have been this for awhile, feels like I've posted it 4-5 times during Trump's term.

The Divided States of Regressive America
"By God" is anything but natural. Faith is part of the human condition and God is a human creation. More robust measures in favor of the separation of church and state are despaerately needed.
Two of the justices of the Supreme Court of the United States also believe in this bullshit
Separation of Church and State you bastards, we're not a theocracy.
Translation: Human rights are to be defined by a shoddy interpretation of a two thousand year old scripture by a group whose agenda is to deny as many human rights to as many people as possible.
Let me guess: anarcho-capitalist "NAP" garbage, assertion of a biological master race (a.k.a. Christian white people), claims that women are genetically inferior, and the right for all superior beings to take whatever they want from - and/or do anything they want to - their lessers (or anyone they otherwise don't like through various loopholes and added provisions) without consequence because "that's how nature works". Legalized social Darwinism because "nature is competition and he with the gold makes the rules".
Am I 100% right? Thought so.
i've tried to tell this to a lot of people but they just say "well it's not actual law so it doesn't matter!!" or something
Ladies and gentleman, i give you one of the most blatant signs that the United States is becoming a theocracy.
The private school i whent to had a fucking hard on for this shit and I bet you 5 extra large dragon dildos that thoses same teachers are cumming to this news.
More often I've heard that it was only ever intended to be unidirectional. Like, the state can't interfere with churches but if the church wanted to run the whole government there's nothing that ever could or should stand in their way.
I'd say they're completely ignoring the "make no law respecting an establishment of religion" part, but these people don't know what respect is to begin with so it's kind of a lost cause.
Theocracy schmeocracy. These people don't actually have any faith, they merely use religion as a means of control.
Eh I would argue that these people have "faith" its just not the original Christianity kind of fath and more of a self serving white jesus regan kind. And of course there are those who use religion to control but doesnt that still fall under theocracy? Or do we just call it totalitarianism/dictatorship?
Fair enough. I'm not even a Christian (anymore; I was raised Catholic due to my mom but rejected it before I even hit my teens), but even those who "believe" in a corrupted, "JESUS IS AMERICAN!" version of actual Christianity are no better than those who lie about their faith to serve their agenda, since they ultimately just use it as that same club to beat others over the head.
I'm not a religious person, but I know it's something that can provide legitimate moral guidance as well as give genuine hope and strength to decent people (there's a reason my mom is still Catholic and she had nothing but good intentions in trying to pass it onto me), and seeing it turned into something ugly and selfish just steams me. If these people believed in an ounce of what Christianity actually stood for as preached by Jesus, they ought to be absolutely ashamed of who they are.
It's literally written in the first amendment of the constitution that the government can't pass any laws to "respect an establishment of religion." The next time someone says that to you, ask them if free-speech is actual law and see what they say.
It would matter pretty fuckin quick if it were a different religion doing it
legit this is from a few days ago
we were walking into a pizza place (me, mom, aunt), and there were a group of muslim women inside
mom/aunt make racist remarks and i remember one in particular
"yeah, well, they better not try to enforce their laws on us!"
big think 🤔
We're going to have to forcibly separate these wannabe clergymen from the state, aren't we?
America is a secular republic. It is not a theocracy, wherein tyranny is justified by a hodge podge of scripture wherein moving boundary stones was decreed to be punishable by death. It is a republic, and a republic derives sovereignty and laws from the people and not from God. If they go ahead with this proposal, it is a betrayal of the values that America's constitution and governmental framework is literally built on.
Holy shit, this is so scary to see. Amazing how Zappa put it.
too bad we have 5 justices who don't see any problem with just taking great inspiration from the bible, to the point that it'd be plagiarism elsewhere
