So if you own either season of Minecraft: Story Mode on Microsoft Windows, macOS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Android, or iOS, you have until June 25th, 2019 to download the episodes. We’d recommend checking you have all the episodes downloaded!

Wait why are purchasers not allowed a re-download?
All of my Walking Dead games, Tales and Wolf allowed to be re-downloaded again. Why is Minecraft different all of a sudden?
So for people who have paid for the games, if they don't re-download before they're taken down, they have to resort to pirating? Legitimate owners of the game have to pirate?
They're taking the piss with this, like this is just a middle finger to the consumer, fuck you if you bought it, download now or forever have a game you paid for be off limits to you through legal means.
This is super not normal, I'll bet that something went sour with licensing.
This is how it's going to go for a lot of games. First it's the shitty minecraft game, then it's a cult classic that had their developer go under.
While it sucks it won't ever be available legally, i think we can completely preserve it thanks to it being on PC and Mac.
Wait, this can't be legal. They can't just deny you access to something you've bought.
Is this a first for steam? I have many games that aren't available anymore but I can download them as much as I like. I've never heard of one now able to be redownloaded.
It is not a first for Steam but it's rare. Not counting rules violations and shit, games are pulled entirely when licenses don't just quietly expire but are actively revoked, and I'm betting that's what happened here.
A dev taking a game down from sale means they don't support it anymore, but anyone who still bought it can keep what they paid for because why the fuck not (even if servers the game relies on to work are down). A dev taking a game down and nobody can access it ever again if they don't preserve a downloaded copy by the deadline, that's distribution rights being pulled entirely; they can't let anyone download the game anymore.
An example that comes to mind from Amazon Kindle's ebook store a few years back: An unlicensed copy of 1984 was being sold on Kindle and thousands of people bought it before the actual rightsholders contacted Amazon and informed them of the infringement, as 1984 is still under copyright. Because the illegal release should've never been published on Amazon to begin with, Amazon was forced to remotely delete the copies off everyone's Kindle -- everyone was given a refund, mind you.
They can't allow you to not redownload something. Even if the game gets pulled from the store, you've been allowed to redownload it
GOOD RIDDANCE
Oh, and the only physcial retail copy is Epsiode 1 of the first season and a download code for the rest. Thanks Mojang, Microsoft and holding company of Telltale's corpse.
The hypothetical has become true.
im sure this is gonna go just fine in the EU
Unfortunately due to the way most of these places work, when you agree to the EULA you're generally agreeing that when you purchase a game, you're actually purchasing a licence to play the game and not the rights to actually own the game, I know for a fact that's how steam works at least.
A lot of licenses go into a game. There's licensing for the IP used, the music, absolutely anything that was outsourced (writing, modelling, texturing, literally any asset creation that might have had a weird contract). It could be something as small as "These eyeball models came from 3d scans and the license isn't transferable, and there's no more studio to fix the problem so we need to remove it".
Since the studio folded it really could be almost anything.
The fuck, I still still download The Movies on steam even tho that was pulled years and years ago, so why the hell they are doing this shit.

the precedence this sets is not positive in any way, regardless of your feelings towards the actual product.
Congrats, you can't see 2 feet in front of you.
B-but there are 4chan memes to mindlessly spout! You're denying him his lulz-given right to be an insufferable netizen!

Most seem pretty cheesed about this as well.
I am surprised Mojang doesn't have complete control over it. Why would Telltale own it?
licensing.
Regardless of how you feel about a particular piece of media, seeing any project get completely removed is something awful to see.
I can't imagine what it's like for the people who spend months/years of their lives creating this game and see it completely removed from sale for some bs legal reason.
Im not going to jump the gun here. Maybe they just mean that redeeming codes wont work anymore and to make sure that the dlc is tied to your account.
removing a game from stores is one thing, but outright banning customers from using the product they paid for is some chinese totalitarian shit
Eh... Nah Microsoft/Mojang is pretty Adamant you have everything DOWNLOADED not purchased, actually you can't really purchase the game on a lot of platforms anymore it was pulled from the play store around the time TT went under, you can still get to it via direct link and download it but you haven't been able to buy anything in a long time if you don't already own it.

Important to note that this has never been tested in court however.
