The jacket belongs to his son, Alex, who was murdered on his 27th birthday in 2012 when a gunman burst into the Aurora movie theater where he was watching a Batman movie and opened fire. Twelve people were murdered and another 58 wounded. Sullivan responded to the tragedy by becoming an outspoken gun control advocate. In 2018, he ran for state House with gun control as a central theme, knocking on 10,000 doors across his deep red, suburban Denver district. His efforts paid off: The Air Force veteran and former postal worker beat incumbent Cole Wist (R) with 54 percent of the vote to become the first Democrat ever to hold the seat. Once in office, Sullivan did exactly what he told voters he’d do, co-sponsoring a “red flag” bill that empowers judges to temporarily seize someone’s firearms if they’re having a mental health crisis. Gov. Jared Polis (D) signed the bill last month, though it won’t go into effect until 2020. For his efforts, however, Colorado Republicans and an extreme gun advocacy group called Rocky Mountain Gun Owners are trying to have Sullivan recalled. Recall petitioners have until July 12 to gather 10,035 signatures from residents in Sullivan’s district, equal to 25 percent of the people who voted in the last election. If they succeed, the question will go to a ballot. But Republicans’ explanation for the recall doesn’t exactly make sense. In her petition to the Secretary of State, Colorado Republican Party Vice Chairwoman Kristi Brown argued that Sullivan “should be recalled for ignoring the will of his constituents.”  Polling data plainly suggests that’s not true. Polls conducted for advocacy groups like Everytown and Giffords, as well as a survey by the GOP firm Magellan, all show Colorado Republicans strongly support red flag measures like the one championed by Sullivan.
The real gun culture in America is preventing anyone from doing anything about gun culture if even one person finds it objectionable. Also why are they getting mad at this guy when the legislature passed it? If he's ignoring the will of Colorado constitutents, isn't everyone else who voted for it in the state house and senate? Just another attempt to turn democracy into a popularity contest that Republicans must win so they can keep the country stuck in the 80s, or 50s, or 1850s depending on exactly how badly they hate women and queers.
Republicans in Nevada have a penchant for spamming recalls so I'd imagine it's the same there
I could understand, even support, this shit if he was trying for a blanket ban or something equally stupid like that. But the guy actually put forth a reasonable bill that doesn't interfere with the rights of the millions of innocent gun owners that live in or visit Colorado, one that actually might be able to avert the next Aurora shooting. Fuck off ya cunts. And that's coming from a die-hard 2A supporter. Fuck off.
A recall election over this is stupid, but there are some legitimate issues with red flag laws in their current state. Even if you successfully appeal to a judge to overturn an unjustified/fraudulent protection order filed against you, the person who filed it is never punished; and unlike most accusations they’re allowed to remain anonymous throughout the entire hearing. To make things worse, in many cases the police can refuse to return your property despite a successful appeal. Basically this legislation can be used as next level legalized swatting. Something really needs to be done about how unfair the appeals process of this legislation is (assuming you can even afford it).
But Republicans’ explanation for the recall doesn’t exactly make sense. In her petition to the Secretary of State, Colorado Republican Party Vice Chairwoman Kristi Brown argued that Sullivan “should be recalled for ignoring the will of his constituents.” I'm not a massive gun-control advocate (at least, not by the measures which have been taken so far seeing as they tend to screw over legitimate gun owners rather than criminals/bad actors) but this is ridiculous, how do they intend to remove an elected official for being consistent to the platform he campaigned on?
Remember how Trump accused Democrats of being angry they lost the election so they sicced Mueller on him to "win" the election back after he'd already won? Republicans are missing their calling in the IMAX industry.
You're missing the point of all this. It doesn't matter how effective or tyrannical a gun control bill is, the fact is that the majority of this guys supporters support it. He's doing his job as a state congressmen and representing their wants and desires in congress, and yet republicans are trying to get him recalled for it. It's bullshit.
I want to be able to own any gun I want. gun control does not stop people from killing other people. if we banned guns they people who want to kill a lot of ppl in a short time will just make bombs. I have the right to defend my home with whatever force I see fit and so do you. my dad was sued by the family of a young black man that entered our house with a knife, my mom woke up and went down stairs the black kid chased her with a knife and my dad shot him in the stomach. well long story short he lived because my dad didn't want to kill him but just stop him and his family sued us. the cop that arrieved on scene had told my dad you should have killed him because he will sue. so if anyone enters your house shot to kill.
Boy, it's a good thing this legislation doesn't ban guns.
I'm so torn, because this post reads like a troll but I can't be sure anymore. In the case you're not, however, your story is bullshit, and you desperately need to pay more attention in English classes instead of flamboyantly lying on the internet.
What's the case number
and then everyone clapped
Hence why I said it was stupid. I was trying give everyone an idea of why they were motivated enough to retaliate politically over something which was originally intended to be used for reducing gun violence (assuming that’s what actually happened and the Republicans aren’t just using guns politics as convenient excuse to unseat a Democrat governor). Generally speaking, I don’t think most people understand how laws like this are twisted and abused at our expense; or acknowledge that it’s been an ongoing trend since 1934. Again, this doesn’t excuse Republicans from blatantly weaponizing the political process as seen here.
