Hopefully they will actually get rid of the big ones like Steven Crowder and PragerU
Are they going to fix the algorithm so that it doesn't recommend dozens of these videos for little to no reason? Probably not.
Time for the right to spin off their own YouTube called HateTube, only for it to die unceremoniously as no one moves over
Deplatforming works
Watch its bot algorithm go remove a lot of stuff it shouldn't.
Nice that they at least say they wanna do something.
In addition to tightening its hate speech rules, YouTube announced it would also tweak its recommendation algorithm, the automated software that shows users videos based on their interests and past viewing habits. This algorithm is responsible for more than 70 percent of overall time spent on YouTube, and has been a major engine for the platform’s growth. But it has also drawn accusations of leading users down rabbit holes filled with extreme and divisive content, in an attempt to keep them watching and drive up the site’s usage numbers.
...
In response to the criticism, YouTube announced in January that it would recommend fewer objectionable videos, such as those with 9/11 conspiracy theories and vaccine misinformation, a category it called “borderline content.” The YouTube spokesman said on Tuesday that the algorithm changes had resulted in a 50 percent drop in recommendations to such videos in the United States. He declined to share specific data about which videos YouTube considered “borderline.”
not a chance, pragerU is outright extremist but they have snazzy graphics and look professional enough for youtube to shrug
No, instead of focusing any against any major channels that manage to slip extremist views to a large and impressionable userbase. They're just busy fighting against channels that upload songs about the Yugo War or lesser known combat footage archives.
Anything else would loose them that sweet, sweet revenue.
It's pretty obvious the reason the algorithm recommends these videos.
They get clicks from people who heavily agree or from people that are mad that it exists.
Youtube is already a gigantic money sink. If Google was afraid of losing money they never would've bought it in the first place. What they're trying to avoid is the bad PR that comes with shutting these channels down. Every day dozens of videos are made telling viewers that youtube (and by extension Google) is unfair, oppressive, and malicious. Any time Youtube inconveniences anyone for any reason gives those videos ammunition and spreads their message further. So Google seeks the path of least resestance, and if they can make people think they're doing more than they actually are, its a net positive.
This will backfire and it'll remove videos that are for and against it
Oh, can't wait to see all the false positives
It's why you'll only see light baby steps taken, despite rightie's crys that youtube is totally Orwellian or whatever due to those chucklefucks not realizing that YT can let or kick out anyone from their house that they want.
I don't think YT really cares about pissing off the rightwing (why the hell should they?) but rather they value their ad income more. It's why I'm more skeptical about them doing anything more then surface level sweeps of blamming videos like "EVIDENCE HOLOCAUST NEVER HAPPENED (PROOF)" or the like rather then any worry that they'll be too effective or the like.
for now, and that's how it should be. the internet has only recently evolved to this point, let alone the giants that now dominate it. how they proceed forward as society fractures and polarizes should be equally measured, it's part of having that much power.
Don't count on it. Give this thread a look.

Varg Vikernes' channel is gone, bye lol
But it has also drawn accusations of leading users down rabbit holes filled with extreme and divisive content, in an attempt to keep them watching and drive up the site’s usage numbers.
This is why they should be going after the people who hide their more extreme positions and are deliberately misleading, but I don't have high hopes for how you could automate something like that.
This is the first channel I thought of too.
rip Varg
I'll believe it when I fucking see it and I stop getting suggested literal Nazi bullshit on a daily basis despite constantly hitting the "no fuck off" button.
Great, I assume we won't be seeing anymore "Now This" videos then?
Also look at the comments on everything this person posts. It's almost universally a bunch of people raiding from Crowder to insult him. I can only assume Crowder is sending them because I don't see comment chains like that on literally any other Twitter user
Remember all algorithms are influenced by those who made them.
Humans didn't directly create these algorithms. That's why they're so difficult to control.
god damn it, my favorite music channels got taken out. what the fuck youtube
This is going to fuck so many Youtubers, but they shouldn't be mad at Maza, they should be mad at Youtube for not enforcing their god damn rules before hand. Youtube doesn't want to seem politically bias, so they do fuck all till someone big says something, then in a rush, overcorrect the problem to making a bigger problem for content creators.
i'm guilty of liking the occasional burzum track
This is going to be like when YouTube tried to demonetize gun channels and ended up killing channels which review Nerf blasters, isn’t it?
...I'm not sure you've fully comprehended the meaning of the word "extreme" here buddy.
alex jones is still on youtube too. what a fucking joke
The amount of people celebrating broad stroke political censorship here is astonishing.
Youtube ruled crowder was within the rules, dude makes a big fuss and suddenly oh the rules changed for him. I don't really like crowder, dude just makes sophistic half arguments without sources. But the fact that one guy got him and dozens of other people from conservative to center left, to non political history channels, and god knows who else, all nuked as collateral. And Maza still says that isn't enough.
And even if it was just crowder, it's still obscene. Crowder and maza have been going back and forth for ages, and yet only now does the guy who's own twitter name is "GayWonk" get riled up by being called queer and call for the lines to be tightened on the grounds of it being insulting/slanderous harrasment. Even though he repeatedly describes himself as queer, and also decided that the most important thing to broadcast to the world in his twitter bio is to absurdly allege that tucker carlson is a white supremicist. The man happily identifies as the very word he's describing as "vitriolic and hateful", and is happy to put out absurd or otherwise strictly partisan opinions, such as encouraging the use of force in political protest, out there from his mighty coorporate platform on vox. But as soon as some guy on youtube makes videos arguing his points with a few edgy jokes, he feels compelled to cause a media firestorm and stamp him out, who cares how many bystanders or precedents are consumed along the way.
I don't care what you think of crowder. frankly everyone involved in this are obnoxious partisan sophists. But I don't think crowder did anything wrong, and if you do think crowder did something wrong, it's readily apparent that Maza can at the very least match him blow for blow in terms of infractions. And maza came out on top because he had the ability to stir up a force of big dollar coorporate media to stomp out some guy on youtube, damn whoever gets caught in the crossfire. It's no coincidence that youtube's comment on the matter made a big deal of announcing the "Raising up of authoritative voices", specifically describing that as "Top news channels".
This, like every apocalypse before, is a big money push to destroy competition that's rendering them unfit for purpose. And y'all motherfuckers are happily cheering them on because it's a point for your tribe. I don't claim sides, but if it somehow this was reversed and some butthurt writer from breitbart or fox news or whatever getting contrapoints or three arrows or whatever nuked for saying stupid shit, and bringing down scores of people completely not involved as collateral, and tweaking the algorithm to discriminate against that content on the basis of politics, y'all would be singing a different tune.
The principal here is terrible. Some well connected guy somewhere can send out a few tweets and strongarm one of the most important platforms in the world to reverse their stance on something they'd previously seen as A ok within their rules, because they're mad that they're getting less views than some big meanie head. If only some people have a right to expression, nobody does. The overton window is drawing ever smaller, and the precedents are ever more awful. Fuck your tribalistic territorial gains, there's bigger problems at play here, and i doubt you'll be celebrating when it's your turn.
