Finally that one 4Chan green text story about a group of raiders shooting down Amazon drones for their cargo can finally come true!
Cant wait to see the headline and the prison time
I know the article says they got a special certificate from the FAA, but I wonder if that also waives the requirement to maintain line of sight with the drone by the operator.
Is there any news on how this will affect delivery jobs? I imagine it won't be "everyone laid off immediately", but are there any projections as to the % of the workforce being displaced, timeframe, etc.
Time to build invest in an army of drones and contract out deliveries for amazon
I can't wait to witness the marvel of having a future drone drop off an Amazon package for me; only for that sensation of wonderment to be replaced by entitlement when getting drone deliveries thereafter. "Stupid fucking drone dropped my package slightly further away, causing me to take two extra steps. What a piece of garbage technology!"
This is going to sound really annoying.

I can't wait to see the natural evolution of the "asshole UPS delivery guy" except it's some poor Amazon employee who has to pilot like 40 drones during his workday who accidentally drops a package too hard from the drone
I hope I can opt out
How faster do they think this will make shipping
I gotta be honest, I'm entirely for this. The drones don't use any gas (and their power source can become cleaner over time, as it's just electricity and can be sourced from anywhere). The drones dont congest the roads. They can deliver within 15 miles of a distribution center, allowing people to get things within hours that they otherwise would've had to wait days for. The sole issue in my mind is the loss of jobs due to automation, but that shit's happening no matter what.
the alternative is just a load of conveyors like in factorio, has a higher bandwidth
train that goes by every house
How long until a farmer starts shooting them for disturbing his livestock? And yes, this has happened before with paparazzi drones getting shot down by people on farmland. It's not crystal clear that it's legal, but farmers have strong legal protections when it comes to protecting their crops/livestock.
Actually, in Factorio, drones are better than belts. Friday Facts #225 the future is now https://v.redd.it/yheltcdz8n131/DASH_1080 don't forget to wear ear protection at all times

A bunch of the amazon packages I deliver are too heavy for a drone to lift. Our jobs are secure.
Drones don't necessarily need to fly. We could see a fleet of Big Dog style robots used to deliver heavier packages.
Spotmini is probably a contender for that.

The noise though, this is the part I'm not looking forward to, it might be cleaner and shit but you know that sound is going to become incredibly annoying.
That isn't a lot at all. The closes DC in my region is twice that distance. Even further for those living south of me.
I'd pay to see Canadian Geese fighting Amazon drones in the sky.
there's 3 airports between here and amazon's distribution center, I really doubt it's gonna happen
It is in densely packed urban areas. Your living situation is not the only one that exists. Solutions that improve the lives of people who live near you are not the only valid ones.
DCs aren't usually in those kinds of locations though. Warehouses tend to be in industrial parks with other warehouses. I would know because I work in such a place.
Amazon wouldn't be doing this if they didn't plan to have it be relevant to their business. They're not investing in delivery drones because it's cool. I mean, I think it is cool, but that's not why they're doing it. They intend for these to be a significant delivery method for them and if they have to move DCs or make some new ones to do it, they're gonna do it.
It's quite possible that they will have a network of drone hubs around their main warehouses. They can drive constant truckloads of deliveries to the hub, and let the drones take it from there.
