I was so excited watching this trailer, and squealed in joy when I saw steam at the end. Evil genius is easily in my top 10 of all time and the fact we're finally getting a sequel makes me ecstatic.

I mean, Evil Genius' caricatures were sort of purposefully racist in the way that their source material, those spy serials from the late 50s to 70s, were. They're self aware of how their mildly offensive, because those films/shows were often, well, mildly offensive by today's standards.
However, in 2019, I don't think it's quite safe to play that same kind of satire. It's a bit too easy to see a character like Eli Barracuda, Moko, Jubei, Montezuma, and think "wow the black dude has an afro" or "the Asian dude has to be a samurai ninja". Yes it's an offensive stereotype, but one that fits within this context; I just don't think that level of over-the-top caricature works with the racial tension that currently exists in the US, whether being offended is warranted or not.
Yeah, they kind of worked for the cheesy tone of the first game, Evil Genius 2 seems to be aiming for a more cartoony/silly tone without going into the cheesy/campy territory, which is why I feel a redesign for Shen could make him work as a playable villain still. It's just a real shame to not to be able to play as him when he used to be my go-to villain choice.
