Some people are working on a Mario Sunshine "Demake" basically working on porting the entirety of sunshine into Mario 64 on the DS.

I'm guessing this is possible due to Super Mario 64 DS having the same engine as Mario Kart DS and New Super Mario Bros DS, which both have mods for it.
