https://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/447728-9-year-old-boy-pays-off-entire-third-grade-classs-school-lunch A pretty heart warming story, well except for the whole "school lunch debt" thing which really shouldn't be a thing
So sick that this even has to be a thing today. Really says a lot.
wtf is wrong with america, even little kids are in debt.
Seems like there's schemes in society that are unfortunately unavoidable for some that in order to live and progress in society you must be debted somehow. Its fucked that this young a kid has to pay off lunch debts.
Was this not standard? You’d either bring lunches from home and if you didn’t you could buy some, and if you didn’t have money they’d just document it to bill your parents or something like a bar tab with no actual limit, article even says they don’t tell the kids to go away if their accounts are negative. Apparently this whole school only had $75 of unpaid lunches in the article. And he volunteered to pay it off for the school as a kind gesture rather than a reluctant punishment. “Debt” seems a little extreme of a word here in the way we’re using it. Pretty sure there’s no consequence or interest rates. In my own experience things like this and library fees from late or lost books can be avoided and don’t follow you anywhere. I was a kid then but I’m pretty sure I’ve still not paid some of this kind of thing with no impact whatsoever, I almost forgot it’s how it worked
