Ever since the new update to Garry's mod, I've been unable to launch the game, I've attempted to verify cache, remove the files from steamapps/downloads/ and restarted PC, etc. It says it fully downloaded and stops, leaving it for a few hours and nothing changed. Since then I uninstalled the game (Had to do it all manually since steam would crash when it's downloading and uninstalling) and when re-installing it gets to 98% and same thing happens.
I don't know what else I can do to fix this, I've contacted steam support too so waiting for an answer from them as this.

I've managed to fix this, I'm not sure which of the things helped as I did them at the same time but what I did was the following:
Unsubscribed from all my Addons (Workshop) and uninstalled AVG AntiVirus, re-opened steam and it updated properly.
Once the game updated properly, you can install back the antivirus and it worked well for me.
You just have to report it as a false positive to AVG and it should be fixed in a few days.
