If you are joining a friend that is already ingame, then you can join him from within the steams friendlist, and it will queue for you.
But yea.. the sooner the better.

Asked for this a while back. Still want it.
More than that I want the devs to actually read player feedback on a game that's in alpha. Just you know, because the players are actually alpha testing. And are supposed to give feedback.
