I have been lurking for a couple weeks and haven't seen this brought up.
The nameplate range is crazy short. With the limited variety of textures its impossible to know who someone is, and is an unnatural disadvantage to friendly players. I wont go into how, but think about it and its obvious. Last thing us friendly's need is another disadvantage.
I understand not letting a nameplate show a hidden enemy, but you gotta be in their face to see them. Consider human memory remembers faces as if they are 15-20 feet away, persepective wise. Whats the range till you see a name? 5 feet? That's not even how a face is stored in your memory!
Maybe a longer range, but when you crouch it disappears?
Maybe same range but you can click a player to "memorize" them (like the full loot pvp game 'haven and hearth' and 'salem') THEN you get a longer range to see a non crouched players name.
The most basic thing is being able to identify who's who. In real life, this is easier than in a game due to limitations of current tech.
This whole "organic free" game Idea is a great general rule to follow, but sometimes specific things do need a little framework, on account of the limitations of a game engine vs real life.
I agree completely. It's even more problematic if you play Rust in groups or clans because sometimes it can be hard to tell who is a friend and who is an enemy.
This is REALLY problematic. You can't really identify friends and foes from a good distance. By the time you realize who you're attacking it might be too late.
Why not only render someone's nameplate when your crosshairs are on top of them, up to a certain distance?
I think nameplates should be visible up to a certain range around you (not too far) or in a cone shape maybe in front of you without having to put my cross hairs over them.
Also to add i think they should be invisible even if in range IF they're behind a tree/rock etc which would help with people who are hiding and wouldn't ruin that. Just an idea.
what about being able to yell? a different key when pressed extends the range at which people can hear you, it would make it a bit more friendly friendly, and also not take away from the authenticity

People which you've met might be added to your contacts list. They could be grouped and color tagged as FRIENDLY/NEUTRAL and ENEMIES. Color tags could be visible from the distance, but full identification could be done in close proximity.

To extend this idea, you could also have a "Trusted" group that has access to your locked doors, as well as safes if/when they are implemented.
