Hi everyone,
Recently I've been having some problems with Rust.
Rust is the only game which is doing this.
Every 6-7 seconds I'll get frame freeze for around a second, especially when I am moving around the map or turning my camera.
I have turned the graphics settings down to troubleshoot the issue but I've had no luck there.
I consider my PC to be top spec when it comes to gaming and this shouldn't be happening.
Here are my PC's specs:
AMD FX-8350 8 core processor running @ 4.33GHz
8GB DDR3 Corsair Vengeance Pro RAM running @ 2133MHz
AMD Radeon HD 7950 3GB running @ 1000MHz Core clock and 1250MHz memory clock
Asus Sabretooth 990FX(AM3+) Motherboard
Steam installed along with Windows on a 250GB Samsung PRO SSD
Running Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit
All drivers are UP TO DATE.
I have checked all temps while playing the game and everything is normal (CPU is usually at 30 degrees Celsius and GPU is usually around 40 degrees Celsius)
If anyone could help me with this issue that'd be great as it's really ruining the game for me when I'm trying to aim a weapon and suddenly it spikes.
Thank you.
Do you have your grass turned off? My friend had this problem, with more games than just Rust. I'm guessing it is your RAM. I know that's more than enough ram at that speed for rust, but my friend had those problems. He stepped up to 16gb and it's running great for him now. He had a i5 btw, with an intel graphics card.
I know it makes no sense really, but I think something has to do with it in there. It seems like Rust wants to use alot of ram. Not fast, but it builds up.
What's your sound device?
And if you're using something USB, does your computer have RealTek sound integrated on the motherboard? (Check in Device Manager.)
RealTek audio drivers have been known to cause intermittent and frequent freezes, and disabling them fixes the issue. However, if you've got analog jacks plugged in because that's how you get sound, it disables your sound, so it's not a perfect solution. :v:
That problem shouldn't have to do with his. He has more than enough multitasking power for that. That would do nothing but a mere few fps drop for him. Which wouldn't even be noticeable.
I always use the grass.on false command from console.
However if I ever have the grass turned on it still does it.
I believe this isn't an issue with my RAM as it's far too fast to have problems with a couple of pieces of grass ;)

I have a Realtek onboard soundcard. I will try disabling it and get back to you, give me 5 minutes

Elixwhitetail nailed right. Rust has an issue with realtek devices ( dont know why they did not fix this issue yet ).

I have the same issue but since i'm on a notebook and realtek is my only sound driver i have to play with this annoying fps spike :(

What part of "RealTek drivers are known to conflict with Rust and cause major lag spikes and stuttering" sounds like "lack of horsepower" to you? It's a bug.
i do have also Realtek and no fps stutter nor any lag spikes
saying rust has issues according to realtek is just wrong
After disabling my sound through device manger, it has not resolved the issue.

It is a lot like this, the freeze is not as long though
Are you playing on official or modded/community servers? Does it happen on multiple servers or just one?

It's not really a bug. Though they can code a fix around. It's the RealTek uses too much cpu too fast (fps lag). This has been confirmed on multiple other games. It's not a bug, cause you can switch drivers to High Definition Windows Codec Drivers and uninstall RealTek and you'll still get a lag spike. Disabling will probably work, but to completely fix it he needs a new soundcard all together, or wait for the work around.

Every server I have played on does it. I have never played on the official servers though, only modded ones.
just fix your damn computers...
learn to handle it and stop beeing a DAU

I've already confirmed that disabling did not work.

Seen that after I posted.
Is your RAM dual card? Do you have a system monitor. Tells your cpu, ram, and swaps at real time?
I forgot to mention that I use a 250GB Samsung 840 PRO SSD if this helps,
however my friend has the same SSD and he does not have the issue.

By dual card do you mean 2 slots? It's 2x4GB
and the only system monitor I have is Resource monitor which is built into Windows
I completely uninstalled Realtek and that did the trick :) Game running smoothly now
I completely uninstalled Realtek and that did the trick :) Game running smoothly now
I honestly think that this isn't an issue with Realtek.
I mean the amount of CPU power I have really should negate the fact that there is a bug with it.
Every server I have played on does it. I have never played on the official servers though, only modded ones.
Okay, we can probably count that out for now. (Shelters weren't decaying, and on official servers, some of which haven't been wiped for a month, the lag was becoming insane; not relevant here.)
Hmm... try a file validation check on Rust in Steam. You might want to also try this, although I haven't had this problem/tried this solution myself.

You're not using any launch options, right?

Sorry I forgot to mention that I've already ran a file validation check through Steam.
When I disabled my soundcard through device manager the Realtek software didn't launch when I restarted my PC.
Do you think I should still try this even though that happened?
No, I'm not using any launch options through Steam

Yes; RealTek and Rust don't get along and haven't for a while, and it doesn't seem to depend on CPU horsepower as much as people in this thread think while assuming it's the same bug that occurs elsewhere. (It may be, but that's not proven yet.)
Oh! Before you remove RealTek completely, I want you to launch Rust and hit F1 to bring up the console when the lag spikes start hitting. If anything weird happens in the console (especially if you see "GfXDevice is in invalid state" or something about still resynchronizing), tell us.

Sure, I've actually seen this error before when I've hit F1. I'll see if it has a connection between this and the spikes, or if it's just when I've alt+tabbed out of Rust.
Thanks for your help troubleshooting this issue, you've been great help so far.
Alt-tabbing often causes that error, so make sure you don't do it while checking on the console during the lag spikes.

Sad for notebook users like me that cannot do anything except wait. I tested diferent drivers and a LOT of sound programs out there. The only solution i got was to fully uninstall and remove realtek.
I dont know why this only happens on a few realtek cards but i assume its really realtek fault.
Alt-tabbing often causes that error, so make sure you don't do it while checking on the console during the lag spikes.
I know :)
Anyway, I've uninstalled the Realtek software and driver after checking that there's no errors in console when the spikes occur (there was none) and it seems the lag has stopped!
However, I now have no sound which means... Well, RADS + enemy gunshots aren't going to be heard by me!
I guess I'll just go and buy a new soundcard and install it. I've been meaning to get a new one anyway to be fair.
I guess this is a good excuse to buy one.
A big thank you to everyone which helped me!
Also, would this be okay as a decent soundcard? Can anyone recommend anything better within the same price range?

And NoxidGaming didn't have faith in me. Glad we found the source of the problem, but we've created a new problem along the way. I did say this wasn't a perfect solution. :v:
Suggestion: You should be able to get a fairly cheap USB headset, if that would interest you. USB devices are their own sound devices, so all you'd need to do is plug it in and go. However, if you've got speakers set up nicely and intended to get a new sound card anyway, here's the perfect excuse!

Thanks for the tip, but I have some Sonos speakers which I intend to use with this new soundcard. I've always disliked headsets, even as a gamer.
I use a webcam with a built in mic as my main mic haha!
Once again, thanks for your help!
Yeah, a Sonos system is way better than a cheap headset unless you can't make a lot of noise in your house.
Thank you so much for your patience and cooperation. I wish everyone who came to the Rust subforum with technical problems was as easy to work with. That made finding and resolving the issue much easier. Also, you are my best friend forever for putting your specs in the thread OP right away.
I had this issue and found that using my webcam mic caused the biggest spikes.
It would power on/off and saw the spikes at those points. I tested this by opening the webcam suite (so it would power off) and no spikes... But then it wouldn't share resources with the game and trying to change those settings in the device manager caused the error/spikes also.
Plug and Play driver issue? Rusts code being buggy in regards to attached hardware? who knows!

USB headsets works on notebooks as well ? If yes could you give me some examples ? Should i get a usb headset or usb soundcard ? I'm on a asus notebook n550jv and i cant really use any kind of external soundcard except usb or portable ones. Sucks that they force you to use realtek and you have zero options (customization wise ).

To OP: You sure you dont have the sound from your radeon gcard ?
