When crafting the components for my house, I noticed I wasn't running out of wood.
This picture highlights all the relevant item counts before crafting has completed:

This picture highlights the same, showing that the items have been crafted, but one stack of wood is now larger than before (increased by the amount that the stack had fallen short by):

As far as I can tell from other attempts to reproduce the bug, this only happens when none of the material stacks are >= the required amount. For example crafting 1 wood foundation (requires 60 wood) with many stacks of quantities varying from 30 to 45 can give me over 100 wood. I'm not at all sure but I think having more stacks that fall short increases the amount added.
Thanks a lot for the report! Have you noticed this with any other crafting items?
Yup, just checked. I split 3 cloth into 3 separate stacks of 1, crafted a bandage, ended up with 257 cloth. 52 metal fragments split into 3 stacks became 247 when crafting a pistol.
Works with everything I've tried

Are you a professional tester or what? Just saying this is amazing
You're right matt, spent saturday and today rewriting our item code, removing traces of byte math, and properly handling more than one stack. Just finished working on it and am about to test a bit locally before putting a new server up.

I love you for being this quick.
I'm gonna miss infinite item spawning but at least it will add to the realism when it's fixed.
