I have been playing Rust for several months now. Since the latest update on 06/16/2016, I have had absolutely no sound in Rust. My sound works just fine with every other game and with every other app that uses sound. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game twice, I have verified cache, I have opened sound mixer in game to check volume, I have made sure that sound is turned up in game controls, and I have tried a multitude of other unsuccessful attempts to fix this issue. PLEASE HELP!
Right click small speaker icon right bottom corner. Choose playback devices and choose your audio output as DEFAULT device to something you're using. Restart game and try again.
I just tried that. No luck. Still no sound. I believe that this may be a Rust issue and not a device issue because sound works with LITERALLY everything accept Rust.

I just restarted my computer after updating all of my drivers andit still wasn't working. I remembered that I recently activated voice recognition software on my pc. I deactivated the vrs and presto, I have Rust sound. I don't know what the issue is but I think it has something to do with compatibility between the vrs and Rust. Problem solved.....I hope.
