Hello, just as the title says, I play alone mostly or with 1 other person, and its always frustrating on big servers because i want my base to be small, and not too crazy noticeable because i obviously cant get as much resources as the 10+, clans and there for cant have a fortress in the little time i get after work to play. But if i make a tiny base armored up, suddenly its a target. If i make a crappy wood/ or tiny shack, it will also get destroyed in seconds, i just want your opinions on what the best course for a base would be, small armored, or big and less armored(box in a box in a box) ect. Also material wise, is it true stone is better against C4? Thank you for any help you can provide. -Superscope
Hide it as best you can and use stone. If you can afford it go armoured on the areas you want to better protect. And yes stone is better than sheet metal against c4
and make 2 small bases and spread the loot, make em near each other to allow spawn points for online defence.

main advantage a small base has is low cost and the ability to be hidden. find places that aren't immediately visible, and make it look like a pointless target. consider surrounding a smaller armored base in a layer of stone to make people reconsider wasting resources raiding it. and yeah, multiple bases; don't keep all your gear in one small place:)

Part of the issue is location - If you are in high traffic or high population areas you can expect to be a target for raiding. I took a different route with my friend this time around. We basically ran around naked, got a bunch of stuff on airfield while it was quiet, collected loads of cloth/leather/fat/etc, then headed into the snowy mountains where the areas are rich with ore nodes. I basically built a 4x4x4 base with 3 floors. I filled the entire outside layer with half blocks and put high stone walls and barbed spikes around it, with antiladders above. There isn't an amazing amount of space but the first floor is just a chest and furnaces with a 1x1 tool cabinet + sleeping room, 2nd contains a 2x1 vault with 6 chests, and top floor research/repair/etc, which is more than enough space for two people. It hasn't been touched yet after a few days despite being in a very dangerous area, but if even if someone got lucky and broke into the 'weakest' point to the storage room, it would take 8ish C4 not including the outside walls/barbed fences, and probably 15+ if they went in any other way, and this is just as stone. It took quite a lot of farming stone for just two people (Probably 50k-100k stone for the whole house, but the area had nodes everywhere which helped), but it was definitely worth it in the long run. You can also build a bunch of bases around yours when you have time, and even split some of your loot over them. It will make it more expensive to raid and even if people only manage to get one, at least you have the rest. As for stone vs sheet: Stone: Better % protection against explosive. Sheet/armored: Both have the same protections, very high tool % but much lower explosive. Armored still offsets this by having the most health by far, though, as even with the reduced protections it can take more hits from C4/rockets. TL;DR: - Gather resources and build asap. If you need build a 2x1 hidden stone base just for protection while you farm. - Prioritize armoring your doors with full armor, it only takes 10 HQM. - Settle somewhere near a high density of mining nodes or you'll really struggle to get your base upgraded. - Eventually build a bigger base that has many layers. It will take quite a while but it's worth it.
Make it look raided. Hasn't failed me yet. People don't seem to bother raiding a raided house. And split your furnace house from your loot house. You can leave them on overnight and not risk losing your shit if it gets raided.

The only thing I would add is that the goal is always to make it so that the effort to get in is not worth the reward of what they get out. Multiple bases, multiple layers etc are great because when someone wastes 8 C4 charges breaking into your base only to get some cloth and steaks, that's a win.
As a solo player of over 1000 hours, I seemingly have this down as I haven't been raided in over a month of updates. Granted, it vastly depends on what kind of server you play on. I would suggest a modded server that will provide more yield in a quicker amount of time than community however, the faster you gain on a modded server the faster you can get raided. There is a lot of good advice above here and you can really break things down if you follow these peeps advice. Now, the advice I will give will probably have some things already said but this is a list of things I have done to be successful. Keep in mind this is based on modded servers. 1: Live Map - playrust.io is your ultimate friend. Use it, study the server map religiously. It is just not a map to see where you are, there are other key features which can be very useful. As well, studying the outline of the map is key. I look on every fresh wipe first the new map the server admin decides to use. I look at the areas on the coast which have heavy rock formations along the waters edge. "Usually", the most dense areas of rock are places most people dont go. 2: Upon entering a fresh server know that time is against you from the get go. After some hours of playing I now can be 75% established in 45 minutes. That means, I have a fully armored (2x2x1) starter, 1-2 furnaces and a base weapon. 3: As a solo player I have never understood why solo players wanted to make a big base. IMHO this is an assured way on how TO get raided. To me, it is pointless and you are just taking way to much time and way to many resources that could be used on establishing elsewhere. Plus, it just seems like your putting a bulls eye right on your position. If you just want to build,go to a sandbox pve server. Or, wait until you get enough resources to lay it all down at once then you can use it as a deterent or a "Vacation" base. * Number 8 4: Staying silent and hidden is your only godsend. The fewer people know of your location the better off you will be. 5: Once you have established a single base of basic operation, you should start preparation of a second base. On modded servers, majority use a plugin that will allow you to teleport to/from your location. Not only can you move from one side of the map to another in a moments need, you can also set a foundation down and save your location to that foundation. Then, you can teleport to and from those saved foundations. The server I play on allows up to five saved locations. That means you can have up to 5 bases. This will allow you to spread your resources gained around the map and DO NOT EVER KEEP YOUR RESOURCES IN ONE AREA! Currently I am operating 3 bases. 1 containing nothing but furnaces. 1 for backup containing general items needed in case of a raid. 3 my main armory containing all things explosives and building. 6: With the new system of blueprints, it is now just as essential to learn as much as you can as fast as you can. If your playing with another,be regimented and have a system where your friend will be the gatherer and you are the crafter. Imho, the essential is learning and crafting C4. I make this priority. 7: The only assurance to your survival is to take from those who would overtake you. C4 is that assurance. Sulfur,Gun Powder, charcoal are all items you should be preparing even if you dont have a learnt bp. I cannot stress this enough. During the times of learning bp's and gathering resources to do so, make notes of the bases on your server. When I go out, I am not only resourcing I am seeking out those who I will hit. Consider it a scouting mission every time you go out. You do not have to use all the server's allotted Home saves, and I would suggest saving two TP's for this exact purpose. Once you have a base or bases spotted, thrown down a foundation and you can travel between those bases and your own. That way, I know where it is and can get in and out ...fast. 8; Once you have established yourself and you have plenty of resources, consider doing a vacation base. This is a larger structure that you could invest your time with. I would not suggest making it anything other than wood. I would also not place any kind of container whatsoever. People will just walk away if there is nothing for them, trust me. This base is also something to take you away from the constant grinding of gathering/resourcing. As well, it is also a base that you can tell people it's location. YOU WANT to tell them this location. Why? Because now people know where you are, they THINK this is what you are dumping your efforts into and because nothing is really even there for them to take? They walk. In other words, it is a deterrent. These are just a few samples of things I use on a week to week basis. Think outside of the box and you will survive.
