Rustangelo (Automatic sign painter for Rust) - IS IT BANNABLE?
14 replies, posted
Hello,
There is a software currently in beta that allows you to automate the painting of in-game signs from any image file, by controlling mouse movements:
Official site: http://www.rustangelo.com/
Demo + discussion: https://www.reddit.com/r/playrust/comments/4o8xrb/rustangelo_automatic_sign_painter_for_rust_update/
So the obvious question here, that the developer supposedly couldn't get answered by the devs, is - is this considered cheating? Can it be automatically flagged by EAC or server-side?
Can we use it?
Would love to get some input from the devs, and hope you guys can help me. Thanks.
PS.: I'm in no way affiliated with the developer of this software and I'm not posting this to advertise it... I'm aware of the rules.
I asked on the slack owners group today about this got an answer from Alistair (FacePunch Q&A guy).

Looks like its a good app :D or maybe not lol

Thanks, kulan. I guess that's that, huge red flag for anyone thinking of using it...
Looks like the guy basically took this or another similar to this system https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lfm9PudSHRY and made it rust instead of ms paint.

I'm sure it's not the only software that does that, as it's a pretty simple functionality.
I just find kind of scummy that the dev is advertising it and charging up to $20 (price of the game) for something that he didn't care to make sure it won't ban its users. He said he asked via Reddit and didn't get an answer, but in 5 minutes I created this and found out it can possibly screw you up...
Or maybe I'm wrong and it won't ever get anyone banned, idk.
Why run the risk when oxide has an image importer for free?
Alistair only said blocked not bannable. I guess some anti-macro ingame code that the devs are thinking about might mess it up.
But seems the free version is fine to run and does not inject anything so should not trigger any bans now or ever.
Edit: Just to point out i am not affiliated with this free app in anyway.

That requires a server plugin, so it only works on a smaller number of servers on the Modded section.

You are right, he didn't say anything about being banned, but he did imply it could automatically be mistaken for a no-recoil script (or something else).
I guess it's up to people to risk it, but it's always good to make an informed decision, as I'm afraid most people wouldn't consider the possibility of being banned for decorating their bases

EAC Can't detect scripts. that are not injected to the game memory, free version is safe i'm sure.
Been using this for over a year....no issues

As far as I know EAC does block scripts like the ones created with AHK
EDIT: Actually I found this from [EAC]Nago, from a month ago:
"Hi,
Currently AHK is allowed as the scripts itself cannot be detected and/or white-listed. AHK is either allowed or completely blocked. If we block it then it will cause issues for people that are using it for legitimate purposes.
However since a lot of people are using it to gain unfair advantage over other players we are considering of blocking it."
So, it's not blocked because they can't tell what is legitimate and what is not, but they definitely can block it if they want, and in that case I suspect EAC wouldn't be able to tell what is a no-recoil script and what is an automatic sign painter...

You may be mistaking it for something else, as this one is not even released - it's been in closed beta for idk, a few months? Maybe a month.
Ahh my mistake and yes you are correct however this is something that is very close to the same thing called Paint Artist and has been around for a long time. http://oxidemod.org/plugins/sign-artist.992/
*Actually , I guess I should have taken a closer look as this is different. Cool though

Oh im sure, I'm just saying took something like that and just added onto it. I think he should just have a donation button and if people want to donate they can, then give them access to more features but charging for it seems kinda scummy, I understand the time and effort he put in. However, its not something that you can really market/sell for considering EULA etc for Rust.
You're my man! I had a short debate on the second Rustangelo post on Reddit, so can you please read my points and tell me what your opinion is? Because in short, the dev is targeting a demographic for this game specifically, so 1 he is charging for people that will not be a lot in count that buy it (obviously he isn't doing it for a proper income). 2. Why does he charge with the argument "to support the dev" when there is a donation button at the bottom? 3. From a good-willed programmer's perspective, such a thing should not impose restrictions on users. He isn't microsoft or apple firstly and secondly open-source (I am not saying he shiuld do this) get a lot of good reputation. Having the pro version is a form of advantage over other players as it CHANGES the functionality of the program.
In comparison, League of Legens is free and you can pay for skins which DO NOT change the functionality (or gameplay) of the game. Judging by his approach I think he's just being a money-oriented person who just wants advertising and ego-stroking. He just can allow it happen with his skills, but so can I...
To be completely honest with you I have no issue with his paying model. Personally (I'm a programmer) I wouldn't charge anything before being 100% sure that it wouldn't cause problems to my users, as his "free" app could potentially cost people the $20 for the game plus a big stain on their reputation, but other than that, I don't really have anything to say.
It's still left to be seen if it could get someone banned, maybe not. The EAC response I pasted above tells us any automated mouse movement could be detected and "blocked" if they wanted.. so personally I wouldn't use it.
Also worth noting that the devs read this thread (saw it on the "currently reading" bar a couple of times) and decided no to give it a more definitive answer. I believe that if they were sure it was bannable they would make it clear.
