I wanted to get more exposure on this idea, so I bring it here.
I'm thinking there could be a server side flag or two. For example:
global.recaptcha true
global.recaptchacheck X
In this case the server admin could enable/disable it & also do a "if player fails X amount of times, force them to solve recaptcha again". This would also be optional for the creator of the lock, so the players could optionally disable reCAPTCHA on their code locks as well.
Maybe force the server to sign up for their own reCAPTCHA keys?
Last, I need to mention this would be for entering codes for an code lock you don't know the code to.
Some feedback I've gotten already:
"But it's a game, not a website!"
I would mention that this is why it's optional.
"Doesn't it already hurt you when you fail an attempt?"
Yeah, but you can heal yourself. You can also have a buddy or two syringe you as well to speed things up when brute forcing.
Please don't lynch me too hard.
Somehow I don't think the fourth-wall-breaking appearance of a reCAPTCHA really fits with garry's vision for Rust.
i presume this is intended for scripted brute forces since that is the whole purpose of captchas?
you should be able to try and break the code, and 4 digits ARE possible. a captcha on top just seems pointlessly irritating, especially when you could just have A) the lock have a time delay between attempts and B) the lock zap people (like it does) on a failed attempt.
"no" from me.
I'd rather the lock "lock" you out after "X" amount of fails. Authorized peoplewould have to reset it.
I think the owner of the lock should be able to set the amount of "Zap"
I think the owner of the lock should be able to set the amount of "Zap"
I think I would set my front door to [ Instant Kill Anyone in a 500m Radius that isn't already Registered ]
Also,
Rust: Now supported by reCAPTCHA
Seems pointless, I think the health damage is a good prevention method already.
There are 10,000 possible combinations for the lock. Even if you were to say about 5000 attempts to brute force through a random list of all numbers, thats still 5000hp, a little over 100 syringes (1500 cloth, 1000 fuel, 1000 metal frags). Then you need to take into account the time of having to stop to heal or you die, and it being less efficient if a friend is healing because they can't see your exact health. Then you can have multiple doors and just change the combos and write them down somewhere.
For someone to get to my loot room with this method, it would probably take them hours and close to 10,000 cloth. If they are willing to go that far then I'm not gonna complain that they managed to do it.
If anything they could just increase the health damage to 2 per try, its absolutely insignificant for any normal player yet it doubles the amount of resources needed to heal through a bruteforce attempt.
