Would be cool, but would probably lead the game to a more medieval look? Which I think isn't what the game is supposed to be about. :P

This isn't a sword fight, chain mail doesn't stop bullets. Kevlar does.

In all fairness, Kevlar is made out of synthetic fiber, which has to be manufactured chemically. I honestly doubt that a bunch of naked guys running around the wilderness would have the resource and know-how to make something like this.
Yeah, the game seems to be a mix of realism and standard fps games. Meaning, while a lot of it imposes realistic requirements, you can still craft Kevlar with metal fragments, lol. Chain mail seems to go against the overall theme of the game. Though Kevlar and chain-mail boots aren't generally made in real-life due to practicality, I suppose it is possible. Maybe we'll see more game story later in development. =)
I don't really see the need for this, I just assume because there's air drops this is just some huge arena and we're all crafting geniuses anyway.
Doesn't hurt the gameplay or anything, in my opinion.

That's why you learn to make it through researching it, or finding the blueprints for it.
