• Steam Controller EAC mouse input issue

I recently picked up Rust upon a friend's recommendation and because a couple of guys I know play it. Now I game on my couch, my PC is set up as a couch gaming rig as my flat is too small for a desktop setup. I play all my games using the Steam Controller, and it works great for me. I've discovered that Rust doesn't accept mouse input from the Steam Controller, and research has informed me that it's because the EAC anti-cheat software blocks emulated mouse input, which is also causing issues for certain models of gaming mouse also. Is this an issue that's being looked at? It's pretty stupid that the decision has been made to blanket bank emulated mouse input to try and avoid certain types of cheating, surely there must be a better way than breaking compatibility with certain devices, especially the Steam Controller which is something that Valve is pushing quite hard. Without the use of the Steam Controller I can't play the game at all, as I don't have a desk or any kind of gaming keyboard/mouse setup (I use a media keyboard with a touchpad for navigating my PC otherwise, and it's utterly useless for gaming).
Wow, you're right. I haven't used mine for rust in about two months because I moved my machine into the garage (so I can work and listen for those damned pickaxes). I just fired it up and it indeed doesn't work. That'll really suck when I'm back in the livingroom. I'm going to see if it works streaming from my steam machine when I get home. Hopefully that still works. The steam controller is great for farming and sniping but not so great for fast shooting like the pump or ak. fwiw.
The steam controller is great for farming and sniping but not so great for fast shooting like the pump or ak. fwiw.
that's just because you haven't used it as much
you can thank the cheaters for abusing no-recoil scripts... let's hope they have a way of unblocking you guys..
that's just because you haven't used it as much
No, I use it all the time. It honestly can't compete with the mouse for accuracy in high speed situations. Not saying it isn't good, but if you're decent with a mouse you will certainly find the steam controller doesn't quite compete. I think it's great for delicate stuff though like sniping, I find it much easier to line up shots because it moves much smoother than a mouse. That said, isn't it so much better than an XBC? Like maybe eleven or twelve orders of magnitude better? All preferences of course. Just like playing from the couch is how some folk prefer or have to play. Shame to see that taken away from everyone. I'm almost done welding this body mount back up, then I'll be headed back into the house to test if it still works with streaming.
The same thing has happened with using the steamlink as well, I've been unable to play using the steamlink to play rust (as unusual as it may sound, I play whilst I'm on the running machine via a monitor hooked in front of it). The steamlink uses this same emulated mouse thing, and something changed a couple of months ago which broke it :(
Yep, I can confirm. I can not only NOT use the steam controller. I can't use an actual mouse on my steam machine OR even the touchpad if I stream to my laptop.
i can't speak about how easy the steam controller may be, but i've played tf2 with a touchpad fine for years. once you get used to it, its not a problem. as said above, EAC blocked them because people were using it as a pathway to inject cheats. any standard mouse/keyboard still works, it's just the fancier ones with scripting potential that are banned. the only game i am aware of that EAC doesn't do this for is 7DTD (by memory) who are taking a different approach to their cheaters. as for valve pushing the steam controller, that's their prerogative, not facepunch or EACs. it's not like fp get anything for making the game accessible to steam controllers.
Yeah, I think we all know that. Just sucks for those of us who aren't cheating. The device is very cool. I guess for now we need to wait until they find a better solution to the scripting. We should put it on their radar though because they may not know about it. I've sent in a ticket to Facepunch and to EAC. HerrDusty, you ought to do the same. Hopefully they can afford us some good news soon. I'm keen on seeing this fixed before I move my machine out of the garage come winter.
to me Hi, Unfortunately any controller or feature that uses emulated input is not supported by EAC. The reason for this is that it interferes with the anti-macro protection that EAC enforces and there is no way of identifying the source of emulated input. It is either completely blocked or then allowed. In the future it may be thatRust adds native support for game controllers. This is also something that we can suggest to Rust developers. -- Best regards, EasyAntiCheat Team
The response I got. Apparently it's all Garry's fault. ;)
And one final bump.
Orkel <contact@facepunch.deskpro.com> 2:26 PM (1 hour ago) to me Hello filthy whore bag, There's no official controller support at the moment, but it will come in the future for sure. The Steam broadcasting is developed/controlled by Steam, so we can't fix it on our end. Was this message helpful? Yes It was OK No
So controller support will come and with it the problems with streaming should fix itself. So this is on FP to fix and since they have like six guys and four monkeys I'm guessing it'll happen soon™. ei before release. It's just another casualty in the war on hackers I'm afraid. The best you can do is bitch about it in support tickets to move it further up their priority list.
