• My thoughts on Rust thus far.

So I think the game itself needs a lot of polishing but thats sorta what i expected coming into it. The idea is sound though I think, the idea of building yourself a home and trying to survive in the environment. I think the current issue is the environment isn't quite harsh enough. Which gets tricky I guess, I'm sure the developers are trying to come up with a way to make the end game difficult but keep the starting phase from being too difficult which is often a pretty tricky thing really. So here's my thoughts on things that could use work. [B]Hunting:[/B] currently the animals are just a bit simple really, I think personally wolves are more annoying than bears. Both a predator animal though and shouldn't be things you want to just walk up on and poke with an arrow a few times. I figure that'll all be tweaked as the game becomes more polished but it'd be nice to be mauled down by a pack of wolves or be eaten by a bear once in awhile I think. Currently ya just run in a circle and poke them with an arrow and your good. Or just back up really. Vicious wildlife for the win. Some other things I think would be nice to accent the hunting and such could be fishing, or perhaps bug collecting for those new fellers or people who just walked out too far and forgot to bring food. I do like the chickens and rabbits that run amuck, they make for nice snacks when starting off. I'd just like to see a more polished hunting system. Not sure but I don't even think animals have headshots or anything of that sort. [B]Structures:[/B] I think a few more levels of structures would be nice, mean making a wood plank with a hatchet, and a bench is a troublesome thing i'm sure, other wise cave people woulda got the hell out the cave and been building sky scrapers ages ago. I'd like to see some Grass / mud / stick based structures included in the mix rather than a full blown wooden house which would come later on. More variety the more interesting the growth of ones home becomes. Start off with sticks, grass and mud, move on to wood then rock then metal or something not entirely sure but the more options the better I think. Lot of the raiding I've been seeing is people raiding things when the owner logs out. Sorta kills the point of raiding I think, perhaps if there was some way that would make only a portion of their assets lootable if the player was offline could be handy. So the griefer who's waiting around with greedy fingers can't just wait till you log walk in steal everything you own and leave and you log in without a clue as to who robbed you in the first place. But if only a portion was stolen least things wouldn't go back to square one. Also, if you built it, you should be able to take it down without much trouble.. I know there's been a few times where i plopped a shack down and thought well i'd rather live over there, ya should have the ability to tear down and build. Maybe add a deconstruction hammer where you could use that hammer wack your stuff and it goes away maybe giving 1/2 the resources used to build it in the first place. [B]Zombies[/B] Well after fiddling through forums I found that they're to be replaced or removed or something along those lines, sounds like replaced is the way they're heading. I've heard people mention like some form of AI military, I don't personally like that Idea, but thats just me. As to what you'd replace zombies with, well I'm not entirely sure. I like the people to be played by people in these sorts of games. I assume their looking for a place to move the loot to, I don't know maybe its just me but undead that happen to have shit on them seem to work, as far as a replacement goes, at this point in time nothing comes to mind -- Edited 1-29-14 [B]Character Creation[/B] would be nice, but I assume thats in the work. Less we're all to be balding naked fugly men forever in this game. I'd like to see some fugly naked women too, maybe some hobo's with beards. Character Creation is always a good thing. [B]Weapons and damage[/B] I think some of the melee weapons should be a little more useful against both players, zombies, and animals a like. What would be neat is to have body parts have hit points, so say your arm has 30 hp, if someone wacks your arm and that hp drops to 0 have them drop whats in that hand. Or if you get bit or shot in the leg perhaps limp for awhile. I won't get into variety here cause i'm sure thats something that will come in due time. But I think the usefulness of melee weapons is a little weak personally. [B]Guns and ammo[/B] and such, I personally would rather see guns and weapons of a more hand made variety. Like the pipe shotgun or the revolver. I find it a little silly perhaps that you can find blue prints to a m4 go to a work bench and presto you have yourself a brand new assault rifle. The pipe shotgun and things of that sort to me just seem more logical as things that could be built. Also other forms of bow's, crossbows and those sorts of weapons would also be nice additions. I'd like to personally see the assault rifles be limited if not removed, but thats something that could be done on private servers i'm sure so not a huge deal in the end, if i really want no assault rifles i can just go in and turn those off. I think Ammo should also be harder to come by more so with the modern rounds. Its not so simple to build a shell casing. So perhaps some way to police brass and after so many uses the brass becomes useless or scrap brass which could be used to build other things. I'd just like to see more Macgyver weapons and less Modern Firearms. At the very least Modern firearms should be hard to obtain and the ammo I think should be limited. As far as the C4 and grenades go, I'd rather see molotov coctails and pipe bombs. But thats just me. [B]Respawn and Death[/B] This is another tricky one, on one hand you don't want to die and wait to be alive again, but on the other you don't want to kill someone and have them log in a sleeping bag come back out and blast you instantly either. So perhaps a little delay in the respawn could be useful. Even if the delay was only a min or two maybe five I don't know, perhaps have that be an option that could be setup on private servers. [B]Clothing and equipment[/B] This is another thing i'm sure will be tweaked as things become less alpha, but no less might as well touch on the subject, I'd like to see more variety, perhaps add the ability to create dyes so gangs or factions could wear specific colors to distinguish themselves from the population or put targets on their head however you want to see it. More variety is a good thing in the end here. I think most peoples goals currently involve a bright green suit. I think homemade armors would be nice, more Mad Max type stuff where people used parts of trashcans whatever to make some sort of armored suit rather than producing kevlar in your back room. Again less modern more handmade is the way i'd like to see it go. I think all in all the game has a lot of potential. Lots of things need tweaked altered but thats just part of the alpha stage, I figure they opened it up to get feedback so this is my bit of feedback. So props for now, I think the games coming along the idea's there and hopefully once the developers work out their master plan we end up with a lovely result time will tell I suppose. Think i'm out of idea's currently, but will add any more i have as they pop up.
