I was taking some time to think about how the doors could be improved. As of right now doors are not so friendly when playing with a friend or a clan. For example right now, if you would like to share a house you have to put two doors down. How about the idea of maybe unlocking the door, like a code you can enter when looking at the door ( /Allow [player] [true/false] ). Or a more complex idea is the idea of the ability to make a key.
Making a keep has its pros and cons. Some in my opinion are:
Pros:
Allow Friends to use door
Selling out friends (AKA join a new clan and raid the house)
Lootable key, kill a player, use that key to raid a house.
Cons:
Losing a key, no reentry to house
crafting maybe end up being too complex
This could also lead to the idea of a lock-picking kit.
Again this is just one of my many ideas, I looked around and didn't see a post like this, sorry if this is a repeat.
I like the first idea better. A code would be great because:
1. You can tell anyone you want the code, and they can enter your house. They don't need a physical key.
2. There's already ways of raiding a base.
3. Just like you put... "Losing a key, no re-entry to house"
But good ideas!
definitely like the code idea, they did the same thing in one of the dayz mods which was a successful way of handling doors when there are multiple people
I think in terms of keeping the gameplay mechanism similar without requiring a huge additional change in UI or mechanics, a one-shot key would work well.
It could work like this:
1) Door owner creates (or is given) a 'Key Blank' (made from some amount of low quality metal, maybe 1?).
2) Door owner uses the 'Key Blank' on an existing door. 'Key Blank' turns into a 'Door Key'.
3) Door owner gives 'Door Key' to player to allow in door.
4) Player uses 'Door Key' on door, 'Door Key' disappears, and now the door can be opened and closed by the second player.
No lost keys, mechanism is same for original owner and secondary player, no new UI needed for 'codes'.

I think that's a brilliant idea. Its kind of like a research kit in a way, but for door keys.
Not entirely sure how difficult something like that would be to implement though.

Without knowing exactly how the current mechanism works for doors, it's hard to say. I am guessing the complexity would be changing doors to go from one owner to multiple. There is an old joke in computer engineering that tends to apply to software as well: there are only three numbers we care about -- 0, 1, and more than 1. This would change owners from 1 to more than 1, so it could add some complexity. I can't imagine it would add more than trying to go to some kind of "door code" based system though.
An entire code system would have to be developed and I don't see that being plausible. Your idea seems to be the most feasible.
Posted as a 'suggestion' on the Github issues list ...

Hmm, would be awesome with a create that you can lock with a key? Requers a lockpick to open it?

I like this because if another player is watching they could kill the player with the door key before it's used
There have been several threads already concerning security and keys/combinations for doors.
The only issue I see with security codes is that they might take longer to enter than just opening the door, and if you're in a tight situation this can be a bad thing. Time is everything if someone or something is chasing you. Maybe you'd only have to enter the security code to open a door once per login?

I was more thinking when you enter the code, for example, /allow [player] true, would give the player access to the door forever, or until you use something like /allow [player] false.
The key idea would also be a good idea, and "changing" the lock to get rid of any other players keys.
No to rain on anyone's parade, but ideas like this have been mentioned atleast 10 times a piece. Including the code idea. I suppose the devs just don't have this on their priority list yet it it should have been implemented already.

Well I don't think there is anything wrong with keeping the idea alive and watching it develop. Doors are a big part of the game and keeping everyone involved will make it easier on the developers hopefully.
how is it not possible to have a code system? just like at dayz origins. simply bind a customizable set of digits to an item. The right amount of digits / combination = unlock animation. its not that difficult
Woot woot! He thought the keys were a good idea!
Who did? Did I miss something?

Garry did a Q&A and this topic was on it

Oh, gotcha. I got excited thinking maybe it made it on the trello page. I do notice that it looks like the github project was either removed or made private.
