Do you think Rust can ever expand to the point of allowing for civilization to develop? I'm talking about town councils, voting, civilian-imposed penalties for non-compliance. Kind of like self-policing and working towards expanding a greater community. In earlier development, there was some talk of "villages", or even "towns", but as it stands, the infrastructure of the game doesn't allow for it. It doesn't necessarily imply that there will be no conflicts, because there can possibly be more than one community, limited probably only by physical constraints. The only problem is that with the existing structure in this game, any form of cooperation or civilization has to be meta, established outside of the game through forums or other modes of communication. I guess that one of the downsides is that it could border on a second-life sort of simulator with too many bureaucratic hassles and hence turn bothersome, but nonetheless there still remains elements of threats and excitement. I feel that it is a step towards a higher form of survival through order, that transcends the basic need to make it through the night. Thoughts?
I certainly hopes the community can get together to form a huge group and utilize player as resource rather than just useless storage box to rob. I don't think we need any complicated politics and stuff, all we need is someone to lead the group, take care of basic judgement, activities, etc. Just like other online games where people follow up some well known players in a guild/alliance. Form a base, foothold in certain area, allowing various activities within group/clan such as arena competition, trading station, or more functionalities like unlock higher tier crafting depends on what the game have to offer. But as of current state of the game, no. Way too many douchbag, backstabbing, betraying, etc.

DayZ seems to be built around a post-apocalyptic scenario, survival is temporal and there certainly isn't as much permanence as in Rust. In this sense, Rust is one step ahead as it has significantly more structures than DayZ. What I think it could build on is to integrate in-game what groups already utilize in the meta.

I am setting up a server today to do just that. I am making a wild west theme server with pre-made town walls. I am also going to make zones and each town will control an area. They will fight to recruit as much as resources as more hands equal faster growth and more protection. I will have no metal crafting or military weapons besides a rare bolt action and decay off. Towns will need to work together as raiding requires no c4. I have about 20 people and will start with three towns. The towns are not allies btw and hope things lead to big battles. I will use plug-ins to help in this process and hope that rust continues more in this direction.

On a server me and some friends play (im an admin on there) we came up with an idea like this. we set up a town in a castle like way. a stronghold in the middle, small houses around it and a wall surrounding the whole. we invite new players to join us, help gather, protect the area, pickup newspawns or help an ally under siege. this is a lot of fun and it encourages players to be friendly and others get encouraged to try destroy us. creating factions and diplomacy and also jobs! just like zombiewarpig says more towns will appear and wars will happen, with about 50 ish players average this will be epic!

all we do as admins on the server is aid players in need. we have many times, been victims of abusive admins so we started our own community. abusing admin commands to give your city any sort of an advantage will be punished by either other admins or the owner. so yea i do actively participate in the defense and such, but all that fair. it gives 10x more satisfaction defending a hard earned gear and bases.
