I just spent half an hour trying to write this. I'll just keep it simple.
Rust and DayZ are two very very very very very different games. Simply put, they are nothing alike.
Ask questions if you want. I own both games.

So what exactly are the similarities they do not share?
So what exactly are the similarities they do not share?
heavy emphasis on base construction, different mob type (not exactly sure what it's going to be for rust, but it's certainly not zombies), extremely different gunplay, no hero or bandit skins to determine and alter the way someone plays, more open, as it is far less graphically intensive, and I personally think it's going to be a lot more content packed once it gets further into development. They are already creating random maps and new building components, after all.
Just to name a few
By "more open", I mean it's easier to run and hence more people can run it. That was pretty badly phrased sorry.

DayZ runs better on my machine than Rust
I've heard that dayz is adding building soon. Is that true ?.
I haven't seen or heard very many serious people arguing that DayZ and Rust are rip-offs of each other or the "same game" that would warrant bringing the topic up for discussion.
No, they're not the same game. Neither are they in direct competition. Both dev teams have expressed mutual admiration for each other. Both Bohemia and Facepunch have posted record sales much higher than they ever expected in such a short period of time.
I couldn't quote exact numbers but I believe it's safe to say DayZ and Rust both share a fair percent of each other's playerbase as well, i.e. people who own both games. I would wager a guess that many people here also own both games, including myself.
Well I just bought DayZ...
Thought I'd never do that since I am totally uninterested in zombie fiction. But I liked the Arma series with their open world + decent ballistic physics etc.
After an hour of playing I can say with certainty, DayZ has much more annoying glitches than Rust.
Upon booting up for the first time, The mouse cursor only updates its visible position when you click a button making the menus almost non functional LOL couldn't even start a game... looked on forums and found the only workaround is... to run in windowed mode x)
But it looks pretty cool :) I'm sure I'll have some fun with it.
Is dayz really like a walking dead video game like ive heard?
I am looking for a walking dead sort of sandbox game but wasnt really convinced by the gameplay I saw.
Well atm there inst much to do in dayz but get stuff (stand alone ) but I guess you make it like the walking dead with needing to distribute food ammo and guns. So I think it's the closest to walking dead
Did you really need to post that? Its obvious already dood.
Dayz is a running simulator.
dayz is 1st/3rd person survival is it not ? rust is just 1st person for now
I would really love to play Rust in 3rd person tho
Ive heard and read more people compare Rust to Minecraft.
So what exactly are the similarities they do not share?
Most people are under the impression that both are survival heavy games with enemy players, yet this is not the case.
In Rust, combat is unavoidable. If someone sees you, they're going to shoot you. This is because of the lack of detail on characters makes it so you can't tell if someone is a new spawn or not, so you mine as well just shoot everybody just to be sure, but in DayZ, characters have much more detail and you can tell what kind of items they have just by looking at them. (big backpack, rifle strapped on back, ect., ect..) 90% of your items in Rust are crafted, too, while in DayZ you rarely ever craft anything (except for splints, which you'll need because you'll break your fucking legs a lot) but instead loot buildings and settlements. You can also build houses in Rust, while in DayZ you cannot, but a similar feature was in the DayZ Mod so it's safe to assume it's going to be in the Standalone. DayZ's combat is all about patience. If you sprint into a room with 4 dudes in it, you'll be on the floor quicker than you can walk the dinosaur, but in Rust, one man can take on 10 armed with only a pistol if he's fast enough and accurate enough. In DayZ, you have to wait people out, hide let them come to you. Killing people in DayZ is a very tense experience, while in Rust, conflict occurs so often this could be branded as a Call of Duty title. That's not a bad thing, though. Shooting players in Rust is fun and rewarding.
I would say that Rust and DayZ both have similar performance on computers, but you have to tweak DayZ a little bit more to get it to work the way you want to. I have a garbage computer (600 mhz graphics card) and I can run both games on the lowest settings around 10fps, so I'd say they are both evenly matched. DayZ's graphics are definitely better though. Both games are horribly unoptimized also. DayZ has a shitload of glitches that will piss you off to no end, for example, when sprinting in a multi-story building, sometimes you'll just run straight through the wall and fall to your death, losing everything, or when sprinting to a flight of stairs, you will bounce off the first step and fly all the way to the bottom of the stairs, breaking both your legs and getting stuck there for all eternity.
I personally think I enjoy DayZ more, simply because in Rust every 30 seconds someone's shoving an M4 up your ass and pulling the trigger.
Rust and DayZ are similar despite your claim and comparisons are more than fair.

I'm not sure what this means. I personally think they are nothing alike and this is from personal experience.

You used to be able to force feed people disinfectant and kill them. It was glorious.

you still can
you still can
No, they removed it recently.
Version 0.42.116181, released on 2014-03-19
Actions: Removed force feed action for disinfectant and alcohol tincture
http://dayz.gamepedia.com/Changelog
That is really dumb. So you can tie people up, take all their clothes off, punch them to death ect ect ect but you can't kill someone with disinfectant? I don't get the point here. I can't be fucked with DayZ until the zombies are working properly and more content is added though. The game right now seems like a half an hour run to Cherno then a small deathmatch with useless zombies warping around the place.
thanks for clarifying the rust and dayz are 2 different games
Rust: Unactive Dev Team
DayZ: Active Dev Team
I love Rust, it is a far smoother and more complete experience in general and I am really immersed in the post apocalyptic irradiated theme, makeshift weapons etc.
I like DayZ a lot though, feels altogether more realistic but then what do you expect from the makers of ArmA the soldier simulator. More glitches and bugs and pretty empty feeling at this early stage.
Gladly, both have very active development teams, take it from someone some coding experience and 20+ years gaming. Rust at this time is a better bargain, more game for less money. Ultimately they are going to diverge a lot as they develop so a true comparison will be somewhat apples to oranges in the end.
I would have bought DayZ if they supported macs :(
Rust is playable. Dayz is totally screwed up not fun to play whatsoever that engine is garbage
DayZ is more realistic zombie-survival
Rust is more of cavemen turning into soldiers then back to cavemen.
