Anyone kind or gracious enough, or kind enough at least to sign post me where to start with Rust?
My first foray involved two naked men having a shootout, I tied to join in with my rock and was rightfully killed.
What should I be doing please? :)
get familiar with crafting
you're going to die and basically 'start over' a bunch of times initially.
your goal starting out should be getting a stone hatchet, wood shelter, door, sleeping bag, in that order. if you die w/o putting a sleeping bag down, you will respawn randomly on the map. Overall, the map can look unremarkable, so getting your barings can take a while. it's bigger than you initially think.
after your shack is setup, get a fireplace, furnace and food.
you'll initially die and 'start over' because it can be difficult to get to a point where you have the sleeping bag before you die to players, zombies or animals or starve to death.
next step is building a real wood structure. you'll need about 500 total wood i think. you'll need 1 foundation, 3 walls, ceiling, doorway and door.
wooden doors can be broken by players fairly easily, so you'll want to farm zombies as much as you can so you can find the recipe for metal doors. this is probably one of 3 most commonly dropped recipes, but also the most rewarding when starting out. Having a metal door means no one can get into your home w/o C4 (explosives), which are pretty difficult to get and make breaking into just any house not cost effective.
once you get the 1 room and metal door, you have a bit more freedom. you can random spawn around the map by pressing F1 and typing "suicide" in the console. you may find a more attractive area to 'start over', or just learn more of the map. farm zombies to get more recipes, expand your home as you get more wood. remember to close your door so no one breaks your sleeping bag, most anything other build building structures can be destroy by whacking on it w/ a rock or pick ax.
Fast start, get a stone hatchet -> kill wolf 25hp left -> make campfire -> regen hp and cook -> kill a new wolf -> craft sleeping bag. now you wont get lost and you can build a shack and house faster since u dont have to waste 5hrs running around the map.
I generally start by trying to farm box spawns till I get a pick and some arbitrary number of blueprints/items to research. After that, i'll start harvesting materials with my pick till I get enough to make my "starter home" and go scouting for an area to place it. Once it's up I go harvesting more materials both for the purposes of expanding the house and having the materials to make weapons/armor. I'll have generally made a stone/metal hatchet somewhere along the way to speed up the harvesting of resources from animals since the pick is horrible for that.
At this point (if not sooner) I usually go after zombies to get more blueprints and items to research. Learning how to craft things seems like one of the most important things to me in this game since you could lose basically everything else and still be in a decent position as long as you know how to make everything.
ripoff
Spawn, gather resources, get killed, gather resources, get killed, gather resources, build a shack, get killed, try and navigate back to your shack, get killed (x3), find your shack, realize someone has broken into your shack, gather resources, build a better home with a sleeping bag this time, gather resources, get killed, take some time away from the game, respawn because you were killed while sleeping, navigate back to your home, realize no doors were broken down, quit the game because someone no clipped through your house. Annnnd that's how you play Rust. GL HF! =^_^=
Thank you guys.
Will try and have a go tomorrow, will back with more questions no doubt.
really appreciated.
I personally put an emphasis on getting the first (of many) sleeping bags straight away. I don't cook or eat food. Just suicide and respawn. After that's put away and with no one hopefully destroying it, I search for the metal door blueprint.
You might want to get a shack up and running to store a few items but do your best to not collect too much stuff, particularly on an established server until you can get metal doors. Much less to lose. Then pretty much start building a foundation building. Even after that still don't hoard much at all until you can build out and up a bit.
Afaik a single wolf will provide enough cloth for a sleeping bag, and you can solo them with a stone hatchet and no armour if you don't miss. I agree with the people who say prioritise the sleeping bag. You will get lost a lot. Stay away from zombies and crates till you have one.
Bears can be melee'd in full cloth armour with a hatchet by the way.

Meh, I prioritize the sleeping bag once i'm ready to start gathering resources for my house but it really isn't necessary before then (which as I stated before is a period of box hunting for me.) If you die and end up in the middle of nowhere you can just use the console to suicide till you're back somewhere you recognize. Then again, I've learned the map well enough to find my way to somewhere useful from most of the places the game tends to spawn me.
Since you can be killed while offline ...I would suggest after taking care of your food, clothing and basic weapon needs (I use bow myself as it can 1 shot most zombies) you should find a place to hide and I am not talking about a house.
Go looking in the mountains and find some very out of the way spot that should you need to log for the night you can't be spotted easily.
I found such a spot and was offline 3 days and did not get killed...
Kil everyone you see unless they are more powerfull, trust no one. (unless on PVE)
(I use bow myself as it can 1 shot most zombies)
Ah, I remember when I used to bother with the bow. Then I found out the pick does the same thing and I used that most of the time since it isn't limited by ammo. I still use the bow for killing bears/deer and clusters of zombies but it's nowhere near the priority for me that it used to be.
It's certainly a good idea to go look for a hiding spot before logging though (unless you're playing on one of the servers labeled "no sleepers.") If you don't have a house that's at least 2x2 with metal doors then chances are you'll log back in to find your sleeper was killed and you lost everything on you. Even that house won't be enough to protect you if it's in the open where anyone with C4 on hand will be able to spot it.
Sorry for being a complete idiot guys.......
But how do I get a Hatchet? I start with a rock, a torch and meds...

You need to use your rock to farm some wood mate, either from tree's or wood piles that spawn in (gathering from wood piles is quicker but they're rarer and often contested) and you'll need to farm stone and/or metal ore from rocks depending on if you're wanting to craft a stone hatchet or a metal hatchet.
Stone and metal ore are both obtained from rocks but you can't just go and start hitting any rock unfortunately, you'll be able to tell the type of rock you can mine from as, like the wood piles, they tend to spawn in the middle of a field and stand alone away from the rocky hills and outcroppings littering the map. Once you have enough wood and stone you can craft a stone hatchet by pressing TAB to bring up your inventory and going to the craft menu. If you're wanting to craft a metal hatchet you'll need to first build a furnace to smelt the metal ore in to metal fragments.
When I start fresh I just make a hatchet and a fuck ton sleeping bags then just build inside an existing structure preferably near the rad town. then once I find a shotgun I just hunt for lonely noobs in Kevlar get as close as I can then boom reaserch everything. After that I just farm other players for resources.
Practice killing naked peeps with the p250 it'll save your life early on.
Ahh Thank you.
I discovered repeatedly that rocks aren't very good wolf killers.
THEN ZOMBIES!
yikes
Get to know the map: http://playrustwiki.com/images/2/2b/Brandy92_map.jpg
See the wiki for further help: http://playrustwiki.com/wiki/Play_Rust_Wiki_-_Main_Page (might be slightlty outdated tho)
Priority is to kill a wolf, end up with low hp. Hide and craft a sleeping bag.
Place that sleeping bag in a non obvious area, e.g behind some boulders in hard to see area.
Reason being if you're a newb you're guna keep getting lost on the map. If you respawn in the same area you'll slowly start to learn your where abouts.
Always look around you.
Don't start a fire at night, cook meat in the day. Behind rocks.
Don't run around with a torch.
Don't trust anyone.
If you are going for resource runs, go naked. People are less likely to target those who look like they're just starting out.
Don't run along the road.
When you get a rough idea of your where abouts, refer to this map (By MWK Kronix) http://i.imgur.com/4vJXj6u.jpg
This will make it easier to find friends.
The stone hatchet and bow and arrow are easy to make.
Once you get yourself a small home, make the pipe shotgun. Pretty decent dmg.
Fantastic, cheers guys.
Looks like a great experience, can't wait to get going.
I sent you a friend request on Steam mate. If you need any more help I'd be happy to provide it :)
Oh, here's one that gets asked a lot that I don't think anyone has mentioned yet. If you want to craft large numbers of something, use shift+click to add 10 at a time and ctrl+click to add the maximum number you have the materials to craft to your crafting que. The craft times add up though so for certain items you may want to split up the crafting tasks so you don't have to lose your progress on hundreds of items because you need to fight/run from someone when you have 20 seconds left on your crafting.
You can also cancel a crafting task by clicking craft again.
One of the most useful things i have learned is while navigation is pretty hard using Mt. Rustmore as a reference point to know what direction is North.
Cheers guys...
I'm not having much noob luck.
the community seems unforgiving, it surprised me. I though a game in such early development would have a more helpful community.
I have't managed to build a sleeping bag as of yet. Every time I go looking for materials, someone comes out of the blue and murders me with a gun :pwn:
I'm a naked man with only a rock to my name... I will get there, no doubt :v:
Not the best experience in the chatbox when asking how-tos, I've just been greeted with sarcasm and quips so far.. Just like going home for Xmas :suicide:
Here is what I do, in order.
Harvest 2 rocks and 1 wood.
Make a stone axe.
Kill a wolf.
Make a sleeping bag and place it in an inconspicuous area.
Harvest more wood.
Make a shelter and door.
Get sleeping bag, place shelter somewhere inconspicuous as possible and put sleeping bag in it.
Make small wood storage and start collecting wood for a real house.
Craft foundation, 4 pillars, 2 doorways, 2 walls and 2 doors. I make 2 doorways to leave some room for expansion.
Find a really out of the way, as inconspicuous as possible while not being too remote from resources and place my house.
I go pick up the rest of my stuff and my sleeping bag and move it to my house.
Keep in mind you will probably die a bunch of times during this process. Everyone dies, a lot. Don't get discouraged. Try and think of it as a lesson. What did you learn from that death?
Keep a grudge list ;) one day you'll be the guy with the guns and someone on your list might just be banging on a tree with his back to you.
I dunno I haven't played yet, still lurking the vids and forums. It looks to me like most people just shoot on sight. If that is the case, you must stay out of sight. Gather at night, with no light, hide during the day. Assume that people you see want to kill you and avoid them until you know otherwise.
The clipping thing is lame, it is alpha but i've seen a lot of people simply walk through walls or jump through a window and loot houses, so I don't see the point in hoarding resources.
Sounds a lot like DayZ to me. Bunch of A-holes running around shooting each other over loot. Friendly! Friendly! blam blam blam. WTH?

Pretty much.
As for your point about jumping through a window, you do know it's intended for people to be able to get through windows though right? If you want your house to have windows but still be secure, put metal doors on the windows. That way you can just open the door to see out and anyone trying to get into your house still has to blow through a metal door to get in.
