Now I know what you are all thinking, this is another thread saying we need cars in rust. Well, not exactly. In my opinion, cars are not very viable at all, at least on the current map, since there is only one road, and it is a loop. This is an entirely different take on cars in rust. I posted this idea in a thread earlier, but I am also going to make my own thread about it here as well, to see if it can get some support.
So, here is my idea. Cars should go in rust. They will be unusable and damaged beyond repair. However, you can harvest them for some resources. For example, you can grab some extra metal fragments from a car from the car body, the internal frame, and whatever else. Another idea I had would be stealing an oil filter from the car, which can be used as a makeshift suppressor, since in real life, all that is needed is an adapter and an oil filter can be used as a suppressor.
Also, what I feel would be a really cool idea would be to allow you to take a car door off, and use it as a makeshift shield. Now I know it may sound rather overpowered, but here's what I think it should do: first of all, there is a window hole, which is where you can look through, meaning you can still easily land headshots. Not only this, but only a one-handed weapon can be operated, since the other hand is being used to hold the door. You can still, obviously, be hit from behind, but you can wear armor on top of carrying the door, meaning you get a little added protection, if you are willing to move slower, have slightly lower visibility, and still able to be headshot or hit from behind. In essence, it is some added protection for newer players who do not have the blueprints for higher grade armor and need to survive longer than five minutes before being gunned down, because all you have to do is face someone firing at you, move around a bit so they can't land a headshot or really have to aim and get lucky, and gives you a chance to get away, or for them to retreat since what's the use wasting a ton of ammo on someone you can't hit? Of course, the balance for abusing this method of defense is that two players can easily take one down if one takes the front and the other flanks the shielder.
Any feedback is appreciated, I know it's kind of a clusterfuck, but I kinda put this together in a rush, if anything needs clarification, let me know. Thanks
Good idea.

Thanks  Glad to see it at least has a little support, haha
Yeah, cars that you didn't actually craft would be cool. Low grade oil anyone?
Also Rad Helmet should require a filter. I wish that all the armor looked as good as leather. Kev and Rad look like shit

Yeah, something like that. you can modify a filter to stick on a rad helmet, for some temporary usage when running in a rad zone to do some scavenging of resources. As for low grade oil, I don't think vehicles of any type really belong in rust, per se. I feel that horses or wild animals should be used as transportation, though that has been detailed in many threads too :v:
Staff uses cars in Rust, have seen one. so there are cars availible but IMO cars too op on this size map.
but then again i like the idea of having a humvee with m4 on roof just cruising around and randomly shooting anything thats moveing.

Well the staff is different, obviously. I feel that cars should be able to be scavenged, maybe there can be an irradiated junk yard, where you can find some other random scrap metals, among other things. Just a thought though.
I also want to make the point that maybe, just maybe, some very basic vehicles can be made, where you have to scavenge parts from damaged vehicles to make them. Maybe some form of off-road vehicle that can be driven through the wild terrain of rust. Of course, a vehicle of such basic construction would carry many risks such as flipping over and crushing you, or just straight up quitting on you, meaning you basically have to abandon it. Thoughts here also appreciated.
Complaining about cars not going well with the map isn't really any point, since as I've understood, this map is just a placeholder. They will create a new, bigger and better map. Probably with rad towns being bigger, so you'd need a vehicle to get through it without dying of radiation(?).
I'd fully accept the fact that vehicles are usable, on the condition that it is very hard to get. :P

well lets be honest, nobody drives trough chernobyl :D

As long as you only have the windows half rolled down, you'll be fine!
Great idea
I 100% agree

And I agree, I am just saying that a full on car is just a bit excessive, since the map is a bit too small for it and because it really isn't very flat, meaning the drive would be extremely uncomfortable. some form of off-road vehicle should be used instead.
I like your ideas.

Thanks man, appreciate it!
I think this thread is gold. Honestly I don't see why I can't craft a make-shift wooden bike or half wood/metal bike etc. With the current materials I see that as "craftable" Some low quality metal/Wood, and your tires are wood/metal that you use up as the bike is used.
Maybe a type of hang-glider as well to make use of the mountains besides fall-damage.
I like the bike or even trike idea for sure though.
The reason this game is so amazing is because of its possibilities and I feel like this community along with facepunch can make this game great. If anyone is looking for people to play/trade/discuss things with you may want to check out http://steamcommunity.com/groups/RustPublic .

Well a bike is a nice way to start out for a new player, since it shouldn't be too difficult to craft, just some wheels, a frame, and some handles. Maybe even a basket on the front where you can stick a couple items. However, I also feel that for players who have been around longer, some very basic vehicles running on a fuel should be added as well. It isn't gamebreaking as far as I can see, and it is just a little faster and a little more durable than a bike, only falling on the fact that you need a constant source of fuel for it.
I wasn't disagreeing with you :), I was simply adding to the discussion.
Like I said I believe this game should have the possibility to craft literally everything as long as the requests are reasonable compared to the impact the item would have. All of this of course on a different larger map because I couldn't see anything moving over 5x as fast as a sprint on the current map as "real"

Right, well either way, I think that eventually, they should be put in and that would be really cool.

This idea is unrelated mostly, but maybe you can rad-proof a closed vehicle, where you add some extra layering of metal. With that, some areas of the island should be only reachable by vehicle, where there is safe places to build, but a heavily irradiated zone that surrounds it. This way, you will see just "pro" players past that point, hopefully isolating them from the rest of the island, at the same time giving them a safe-ish place to build, it's a win-win, if you can tweak it a little. Thoughts?

i like this idea and my guess is vehicles will become more viable when more of the island becomes accessible leaving more room for running/ driving.

ohh like deeper into the island you go, the more experienced and equipped players you run into? i like. that way you won't get noobs and pros crammed into one area

Yeah, exactly, it would mean a spreading out of both resources and players. Maybe resources can be more scarce and a more dangerous experience, for people itching for a real challenge after they have gathered all they need to survive. maybe some EXTREMELY buffed zombies, that do some extreme damage, harder to kill, and whatever else. I think that would be awesome, since it would be pro players only, where they pretty much have to band together to survive.

deeper into the island the more boss like enemies you'll encounter (im aware this is starting ot go off topic, i apologize :P)

Not exactly, it's not too far off topic, since it relates to cars, given that it is only reachable that way. But yeah, that's what I mean mostly, where you are in much more danger from NPCs rather than just players, it would be a part of the island for people who want a challenge. Back on the whole topic at hand, A very basic vehicle can probably be made. If anything, parts can drop from the plane only, and in very small quantities. This means you would have to get the drop a few times, and even then you might get some repeat parts. Either that, or we can have cars that spawn naturally that aren't as badly damaged, but need a very large amount of resources to fully repair, or you can cut it down for more resources like the other cars.

i like the idea of custom built transportation, similar to the way one can build their own house. You can get an odd 1 seater vehicle or a large transport caravan for clan/friends.

Yeah, good idea, though I think a transport caravan should cost a ton of resources, given the fact that it is meant for clans anyway so then it is like a group effort gathering the necessary resources for it. That would be really cool though, to have you and your buddies climb in a van and drive around the map or whatever.
I agree with the salvage, but not car door shield. Also off topic : animal fat looks like bacon, we should have the ability to cook animal fat as bacon, that way there will be two food sources instead of one.

Well, I thought the car door was a good idea, it got a few positive reviews, but it is ALWAYS open for negotiation, care to let me know what you have against it? I want to know just in case I feel it is something that can be fixed or whatever. As for bacon from animal fat, I say no, since it is used as a fuel, but I say that bacon should be added when you gather it from a pig, though that is rather off-topic haha!
How about cars spread all around the map just like wood stacks and stones, and you hatchet metal fragments out of them? :J lol1
