Saw something odd on my server last night. Someone changed their steam name to "SERVER CONSOLE" and then logged in and harassed the hell out of everyone. Garry - seems like someone found an easy "hack", but I'd assume comes with an easy fix too :)
Should the game be updated to disallow this name?
I think a lot of people quit the server because they thought it was a legit admin harassing and abusing people. The guy was a real a-hole from what I see in the logs.
I've of course banned them, but I would have thought the game with disallow people with the name "SERVER CONSOLE" since... well... SERVER CONSOLE is the server console name ;)

That is absolutely not how VAC works and would be impossible unless garry bribed someone on the VAC team.

I guess not being VAC ban makes sense cause it's not code manipulation, but none the less am I crazy for thinking that Rust should not allow people who change their name to "SERVER CONSOLE" if "SERVER CONSOLE" is the name that has been picked for messages from the console?

@lolo "SERVER CONSOLE" isn't a "silly" name it's an inaccurate representation of a server admin which isn't "funny"/"silly".
It's up to server admins to enforce this if they don't want it in their server. Nothing more will be done about this I'm pretty sure.

I believe for this no need to BAN, nothing really harmful, if player only changed the name, and didn't do bad stuff. But i will definitely contact this person and ask him to change name.
Well if he is harassing people ban him regardless of his name (This is your right as an admin). If someone is using a name you don't like ban him, its your server...
If someone changed their name to Oxide just to be funny and to confuse people every once in a while thats okay by me, but once they start to harass my players, they are gone.

I don't see the big deal. Wanting them to be banned across all servers on a game they paid $20 for just because of a silly joke is dumb. Ban them from your server and move on if you don't like it.

If this happened in my server I would give that player a first and final warning, second instance I would ban. I often admin from work via Rusty so players are used to seeing SERVER CONSOLE and know whether I am admining remote or playing the game. If some idiot impersonated the console and announced wipes and shit, I don't think that's acceptable. There are plenty of other ways to be a funny idiot in rust. This isn't one of them.

I know this why becuase i have it. this is no hack or cheat, it is simply a program that anyone can use.

Pop Up messages can do only true Admins, if you take admins name, you can type message only in chat window.

Aww, I asked our admin just a few days about it. Also I tried to get every player on the server to rename themselves to SERVER CONSOLE. Just imagine the confusion for new joined players :D
VAC isn't going to ban anyone for impersonation of a server console, I wouldn't expect an admin to communicate important things via the console anyway. I would expect them to do it via their own character, in-game.

Rusty has nothing to do with it. The real SERVER CONSOLE is using the internal say command from either the remote console on the host website, the ingame F1 console, or a remote connection such as Rusty. The real SERVER CONSOLE can only be used by whoever knows the rcon password. The problem identified by this thread is that anyone can change their Steam name to "SERVER CONSOLE" and there's no discernable difference between that player and real say messages.
The easiest way to prevent this kind of trolling is to allow the server to change font colors on chat names. Make SERVER CONSOLE a different color as well as some kind of internal command for mods such as Oxide to change their font colors as well.

I mostly admin using Rusty. I'm not going to open Rust and log into my server just to communicate.
Every SERVER CONSOLE I see gets banned. Its not funny. I also dont allow people to name change a million times. If you are on the server your name stays the same. Helps keeping track of new and old people. When someone gets claims of hacking against them and they log to change their name real quick. Banned as well. We don't play around with that crap.
I applaud the guy. I hate trolls n such as much as everyone else, but he's not technically doing anything wrong but being deceptive. Is thsi any different than befriending someone for a day or 2, then cleaning out their base when you have access? nope. If you send the nigerian prince money, you deserve to lose it.
