I have an I5 laptop with 4GB ram and integrated graphics, playing rust in 1280x600 and beautiful setting. Frame rate is really good except whenever I run through a forest.
I don't think disabling grass would help and I like the grass anyway.
Any ways to make trees affect FPS less?
Take a look over at http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1372236
I suspect you have a lower end graphics card. Will need to get a good look at your video card memory to see if that is indeed the problem. Assuming you're on Windows, you should also post your dxdiag information as mentioned here:

definitely low end, like I said, it's integrated graphics, Intel, not made for gaming.
I'd go to a lower level of detail, but I have no problems anywhere else in the game except when around many trees.
You basically are sitting close to the minimum specifications, and that Intel HD Graphics 4000 is not helping.
The game will get better optimized in time, but the problem here is mainly you.
Try typing these two commands into console and see what happens around trees:
gfx.ssaa false
gfx.ssao false
That'll turn off ambient occlusion and anti-aliasing.
