• how is the biome system going to work?

Pretty straight forward question. Garry mentioned something about a "northern coast biome". So is there going to be superficial names for these biones, or are they approximate areas,? Garry said a while back that he didn't like how seasoned players had a huge advantage over other players because they knew the map, so his solution was to move the map to completely randomly generated. Now this works great for a game that's rarely wiped or there are few servers, but in a game like rust, I will be tearing my hair out after the 10th server I joined because I will be so confused on if its this server or the last server that had a specific landmark to inidcate an approximate location. With current servers and admins, players are banned without good reason, banned for hackusations that aren't true, servers shut down, servers die. If the server is completely random, everyone will always be confused on where everything is. My suggestion and question is if the random generation is for certain areas or completely random. If you need help understanding what I mean... So say they take a blueprint of our current map. Valley, mountain, valley, road, rad town, forest, valley, road, mountain, and the list continues on. Like the "northern coast" would always be in the north, and a coast, but the design of the northern coast would be different in each server. A "southern forest" would always be toward the bottom of the map. But the tree and ground layout would be different server to server. I think that is a good balance of randomization and consistent maps. A person would only need to memorize sectors of a map for all servers: north coast, north valley, central cave, central desert, central lake, west mountainside, east plains, etc. Its the actual terrain and positioning of landmarks that are different. Like in every server you join, the central desert would always be in the center, but the plains and cactus and everything in that sector labeled "central desert" would differ server to server. Or a place would be labeled as a rad town zone, and every time you joined a new server, a rad town would sit there, always... but the layout of the complex-- walls, buildings, intetriors, all that stuff would differ server to server. Do you think that's a good idea? Do you think that's what their doing? So you think something else would work better?
I'd actually prefer completely random world generation from all points not just keep the same areas and randomly spawn different looks. That will make it a lot more interesting and completely different game play on each server. With much more to do and so much more I think there will be less reason to constantly wipe servers every so often to get fresh content or to fix any OP groups that are dominating the server.
I think "northern coast" is more an indication of what coastal areas look like in more northern parts of Earth. As opposed to a tropical coast biome. I don't think biomes will predictibly spawn in cardinal directions. That seems like a huge headache of a restriction to force onto the terrain generator.

Part of the survival fun (for me) is trying to figure out where you are at, not wandering too far or feeling too comfortable with your surroundings. Once that happens you know you are progressing and understanding the map and more confident. If you have to start all over with that experience on a new server (again for me) it would add to a refreshed and exciting feeling of playing the game.
You know, I actually think that would be better for keeping the game alive and exciting every time I move servers. I do think there should be a simplified blueprint for the generator to follow like "in this area either a lake, forest, or desert will exist" but not anything that will make memorizing irrelevant for server to server playing. But are there going to be seeds?
The generator is definitely being seeded, but I haven't seen definitive word on if the server owner will have access to set the seed themselves. It's not likely a difficult thing to add. I guess we'll see when the experimental server is released to GSPs soon (garry is hoping Rust will be ready enough for it in a few weeks).
