I bought a server a few weeks ago and have been working on getting it populated. After I got all my advertising set up, people would come on but eventually leave because their was nobody to play with. After a few weeks and no results I am beginning to question whether I am running the right type of server. My server is pretty standard, no durability, half craft and a few other tools and plugins. Basically all the things I look for in a server. However it seems that people tend to flock to the ultra-realistic or the servers with plugins that allow everyone to use teleport, which I find a bit excessive. Am I being impatient or do I need to take my server in a different direction? Ill leave a link to my server thread, take a look and tell me what you think, always open to constructive criticism.

You notice people moving towards the "specialty" servers just because it's something new and different... at least from what I've seen.
Frankly, there are wayyyyyyy too many servers. I swear about a third of all players online at any given time are server owners.
I had an event server for a while, but that was back around New Years and it was a bit easier to populate my server. It actually went better than I imagined it would but the population eventually waned and it wasn't really worth it anymore...
From what I can tell, pretty much every server will die sooner or later... and probably sooner. Hopefully as the game develops the servers will be more stable and more expensive. Increasing the average hosting cost will cut down on quantity and hopefully increase the quality of your average server.
We'll see...
Ya the amount of servers is ridiculous. Low price means everyone and their dog can own a server. Honestly I think I will get rid of the server and go back to playing normally. As a server owner you rarely get to play, you are always dealing with issues involving the server or advertising. If you are thinking about purchasing a server. DONT DO IT!

Just play what you love. If people do not come, find a server that has the style of play you like. For me, I couldn't find a server the way I wanted.
