I think that there's a better way to handle this.
They should be accessible by more than one player at the same time.
Loot boxes could maintain a list of users currently accessing them, when somebody makes a change the others' view is updated.

furthermore something similar is already happening with the furnace or the fireplace.
the furnace can add and remove items to itself while a user is using it.
