I don't know if this has been suggested before but as a extra building material why not use stone as you have a ton of it around and its not really used as much.
Wood<Stone<Metal it could be 6 Stone = 1 Stone brick 4 stone bricks = 1 stone wall.
And could look like this.

Maybe you have to research the parts for it too?
Why not have the part blueprint drop randomly while mining the rocks for ore.
I agree and I wondered this exact same thing when rocks started piling up in my storage boxes. It seems to be the only resource that does not have a use towards the higher tier crafting options.

I don't understand why you would need to research how to make a stone wall. >_> just doesn't make sense but i like the stone buildings idea.
