I think as long as bears and wolves are part of this game, a larger variety of animals would do it justice. Considering they currently just run at you and hit you, many animals could be added with varying speed/damage/health/drops and in later versions of the game the animals could be given unique behaviour as well.
Does anyone have any animals they think would fit in well?
I think these would be cool:
Rattlesnakes - bite makes you envenomated instead of bleeding, you must find/make antivenin to survive. Death after bite would be roughly 10 minutes. I chose rattlers due to their distinct audible sound, they will also be very well hidden in the long grass so you will have to be careful if you hear one. They wont chase you, more so just attack from a fixed position.
Mammoths - although players will always pose the biggest threat, some team PvE animals would be cool. Mammoths are huge and have deadly tusks, but if you team up they reward you with lots of cloth or a new material perhaps. They wont attack unless provoked.
Mountain lions - adds some life to the mountain areas. Ultimately similar behaviour to wolves.
Birds - harmless but people with good aim/hunting ability can kill them for some new sort of material or just for food.
Crocodiles/Alligators - near the water, they can swim and go on land close to the water.
Rats - if your base gets infested by too many rats your food in storage bins will get eaten or rotten or something.
Cows - killable for lots of meat, Or you can capture it and milk it once every game day for a long term food source.
Fish - maybe add fishing to the game for a food source.
Horses - rideable if you have a saddle. Cant use weapons while riding or have huge recoil to compensate for increased mobility
Pets - just for fun maybe
Why mammoths?
Honestly, I feel like the game has a caveman vibe to it. Any large dangerous animal that emphasized teamwork to take it down would fit the bill just fine. I realize they are extinct, but I cant think of any good 'real' animals with that size and stuff besides maybe elephants which are much less intimidating. I didnt want to suggest mythical animals as it doesnt seem to fit the nature of the game.
mammoths; yes:) or at least something "domestic" but dangerous if antagonised
Sasquatch, or any other relic hominids. Realistically if humanity was mostly wiped out it would give such elusive or rare creatures a chance to move in on previously human-inhabited territories and quite possibly have an increase in population. Like what happened with chernobyl after people left, wolves and bears started moving into the 'burbs.
If you think about it, sasquatch would be a sick hostile animal. If ai was done right, could have them hunt in family groups where they're all stealthy hiding behind trees until they have a good opportunity for ambush. And the fact that there's going to be caves would make it perfectly plausible in the rust world. They sleep in the caves during the day and hunt at night.
And they're totally not mythic. There were plenty of bipedal hominids in the past where descendents of them surviving into present day is perfectly plausible. Maybe they're a branch off from one of our ancestors that didn't feel the need to move out of the wilderness so theyve adapted.

How about rhinos, hippos? Could be mutated tho, cus i would feel kinda wierd to shoot rhinos considering how f*cked these animals are by humans in real life. Maybe some other tertiary era giants like Phorusrhacos?
Anyway i would greatly appreciate the environment to be much more lively, bird songs, night sounds, crickets etc. But im sure the devs are well aware of this.
Crocodiles , Sharks , Piranahas , <- In the water to force people building boats
Yes this game really needs some kind of Boss animal/monster that makes the players play more together not against each other. Garry himself mentioned some kind of giant that could destroy your buildings here: http://garry.tv/2013/06/21/the-story-of-rust/ but it sounded bit like an joke tough.
