Okay, so it might sound a bit.. Weird, but I thought about something that'd make the whole "sleeper" thing a bit easier to swallow.. Since quite everyone hate being still "there" while they are offline, there should be some kind of way to actually dig a hole and hide your items inside it, although it will be really hard to find afterward, you can remember it quite easily! Here's an example :
I am currently playing and found a sniper (I'm not even sure there's one in the whole game) I'm walking, and I find an hidden cache (that's how I'll name the player items) although there is no "circle" to interact with, you can find it by looking at the floor, even though you can't notice it at first sight, the ground is slighly different, So, you decide to dig, which take some time (and ask a couple of buttons, for example, you need a "shovel" and you got to press an order, up, down, up, down, F. For example) This way nobody can just "hit and run" your cache while laughing at you, the same goes for digging, so people don't just "dig" to hide their stuff before dying.
I think it'd make the game way much entertaining since you made the sleepers for gameplay matters..
If this is too heavy to create (I think it'd be really hard to do, maybe not?) you could just make a "vault" where player items are secured, in a secured city where people can't shoot each others (kind of a no shot treaty zone in Far cry 3), kinda like every single zombie survival game in the world, except for the difference that they don't have sleepers.
Sooo yeah, that's kinda it!
