I really like where Rust is going, but I can't figure out how to construct a base that will last overnight.
It takes a single person as little as 45 seconds to hatchet through a stone wall. I've been playing for the last week and have yet to be able to construct a base with a team of 4 people that can last 6-8 hours while each of us are sleeping or at work. Every time I log in everything is gone. I've played on multiple servers/maps with no luck.
I thought maybe building on top of large rocks and destroying access to them was the only way to go, but even that doesn't seem to work. I'm not sure if people are glitching/hacking their way up these rocks or not.
Am I missing something? Is there a way to make a secure base at all in the current build? I've asked for advice/opinions in every server I've played on and everyone says the same thing "dunno, get creative."
No matter how massive or convoluted a base is, if a group of people determines you're offline they have all the time in the world to break it down.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Never had much issues with base design on Legacy, so I'd like to think I'm not completely inept at this.
For building a secured base.. There's only 2 options: upon a rock that is unclimbable or in the water at drowning level.
Yet building on these 2 locations still gives the option to be raided. I think those with guns and shitloads of bullets can still shoot down your walls. And if they make it that far to see your cupboard standing... You're still lost!
You have to chose one of these options to build. And if you're building, don't build to much in length or depth. Build up high!! Some walls still seem to be invisible, so the higher you build to more chance you have in them not being able to reach it.
This is just my thought on the current situation though..
Hadn't considered the water option, that's interesting. Thanks for confirming my fears though, it seems Rust is mostly unplayable for me at the moment :/ I'll probably give it a few more weeks and see where it's at.
Yep...I wasted 10 hours gathering the materials needed to build a styling base...like seriously cool architecture. While I was adding some more cool overhangs last night, a small group of militants started picking me off from afar, then closed in on my base only to keep harassing me by killing me through windows.
There were only a couple of them and, much to my amusement, they began trying to hatchet down exterior walls. I told them that they were "complete f***ing idiots" for even trying. To which one said, "well, if I go get more guys, we can just shoot your walls down". To which I responded "Go get your goddam friends then!".
Unfortunately he did...and they tore the place up in no time. Lesson learned. Rust isn't a place for pretty houses...and surely, don't piss off the natives. I totally had that coming.
So how many ak's does it take?
Need to know for...scientific reasons...yea, that's it.
Raiding is part of the gameplay, but it's always been so far out of balance that there's little point to building other than as an academic exercise. Right now, three guys with hatchets can own a densely populated server in an hour or two during non-peak times. PvP is important, but considering the unrealistic nature of hatcheting through a wall (or for that matter, crafting C4 out of firewood, animal parts, and rocks), raiding needs a lot of work.

Also, I CONSTANTLY see people building tool cupboards in wooden or unlocked areas outside their base. A few days later they'll be on the server whining about how someone "obviously" "hacked" their base, when the reality is someone hatcheted into their cupboard shed, authorized themselves, and started demolishing walls / foundations / pillars. To be fair, those people have this coming.
The worst I've ever done is hatchet into a wooden exterior cupboard building, gain access, then demolish every door and replace every lock. Then I boarded up the building again so nothing would look suspicious. Sure enough, the clan was on the next day whining about how someone "hacked" their base.
Not too bright, some folks.
I believe there currently is a horrible glitch that has been here for a while but no one seems to know about, sometimes you log onto what i like to call a purgatory server. Meaning that some walls are invisible to you while others can see them. Ive had that happen to my own house and when i relogged the walls would be back and i think this is how alot of houses get raided. Also sometimes in this purgatory server you or others seem invisible.
People yell HACKER HACKER to fast when rust is filled with these bugs and have been for quite some time now and im down to i believe my fourth house due to this glitch.
it takes 45 seconds to hatchet thru a stone wall with a single person...? u sure ur playing rust ? lol
