More specifically:

If you click the "Sign in through Steam" button you are redirected to steamcommunity.com which is the only(?) site apart from the store you should enter your log-in information on.

map.playrust.io will not see that information but instead steamcommunity.com will tell it in some slightly roundabout way that you are indeed you.
