A user on Rustafied called MistaX told me about this, it's damned easy. All you do is alt+F4 before you hit the ground. You'll sleep in midair, and when you log back in only have to fall the short distance left. This could easily be abused by building massive pillars (higher than you normally would to raid) next to a base and jumping on the roof. I tried it off a staircase someone had built that must have been at least 20 blocks high, with 8 health. Made it to the ground unscathed.
I imagine until this gets fixed we'll see a lot more people abusing this with floating buildings too, so I guess it's really good that you posted this.
Jes, now i will put a cupboard on top of my tower and build walls around it so they cant build that high, and even if they do they had so much wood that they could build a castle themselves :)

Make sure they can't build close enough to your base to jump...although if they make a massive skyscraper, I suppose all bets are off.
All you do is alt+F4 before you hit the ground.
You can also type 'sleep' in the console for the same effect. I used this for the mid-air spawns on 8k maps recently. Related, you can "walk" down the side of a tall structure. Stay close to the wall and walk towards it and you'll catch on the edges, slowing your fall.
Make your roof out of stone, and put locks on your doors up there
I saw a sleeper in midair on the server last night and I wondered what the deal was. I tried shooting him with a bow, but he was over water, so I couldn't get a good angle.
