Hey,
Just wanted to put out two idea's on how to fix these two issues.
1.) Backpack Lock - Now this as most people have explain has been essentially done wrong as it solves none of the following issues:
a.) Noobs running up to packs in a middle of a big fire fight and looting things and or people jumping back into fights quickly
b.) Preventing KOS as the people fully geared will be rolling around with lock picks anyhow, or baiting the pack for when people come back to shoot them down again
Solution: Just put a 10 second timer on the backpack when you open it. When you press E on it have a little crafting timer bar pop up with how much longer until you open the pack to see everything. For the realists this could count as the time it would take to go through the back, or whatever. Now what does this solve? both of the previous issues listed above as if a noob is trying to loot a bag in a big fire fight or someone is trying to jump back into the fight by getting their items back they will be sitting by the backpack for 10 full seconds. This gives anyone a long period of time to shoot them in the head or shoot them down again before they get the loot. However this solution still gives noobs or people who won a hard fight the chance to get the loot(which most people love, who doesn't love loot?).
2.) KOS - People are complaining about being killed on sight as a noob with a rock, and most people either do it for the small loot pile they will get, or as protection encase the noob is hiding a shotgun waiting for you to turn your back
Solution: Find some way to fix the models so you can tell what weapons a person has(Ex. Any hand gun will show as a holster, a shotgun if not currently in hand will be slung over the back, same with automatic weapons, and bolt actions) This way people will know the naked isn't trying to gank them and MAAAAAY let them live, if they just don't want their loot.

Perfect!
I was thinking about a solution all the time and the 10 second counter idea is brilliant
Nice work mate!
I hope some dev will see this
yep, 10 secs is too long, but i do agree that if you lived in this world, you would stash your stuff in clever ways so that looters couldnt steal your stuff really quickly. i would think you'd need to rummage around a while to find the goodies.
5 secs would do the same, but not be awful.
Yeah the time can be adjusted, just some kind of delay so people could prevent respawns / nakes from grabbing stuff in fire fights ect. They could even make the timer on the backpack loot a changeable option on the servers so people who host their own servers can pick how long/short they would like.
Just wanna say, this idea is a LOT better than locked backpacks... Seriously dont hope they put that idea past the dev servers...
Ten seconds is an eternity in this game. In reality, it shouldn't take more than 5 seconds to rip open and rifle through a bag.
This is if we ever get this patch lol
Marvelous ideas m8.
You have my vote.
Locking doors with 4digit code and now locked backpacks...srsly not so far away from safe zones :E
I love these idea's, you are definitely among the smartest people i've seen on these here forums xD
I would love a pop up on how long it would take to open the backpack. It makes killing higher tiered players more rewarding without not able to get their gear due to a lack of lockpicks.

I agree with this. I want to be friendly sometimes, but I'm tired of nakeds pulling m4's and shotguns out of their asses to kill me, so I've just been killing most people I see.

In reality I'd take the whole bag and run. Rummage through it later! xD
but do you guys even know how the current locked backpacks are going to work? From what i've heard all we know is locked backpacks are coming, they could be from 5-10 minutes before people can open, and that there is a lockpick to bypass the timer. Other then that we don't actually know how they are implementing this idea...? right?
I was thinking the same thing about the guns. Earlier today on a new server; I ran into Big Rad, picked up a P250 with some bullets from a weapon crate. Loaded it up and hid it.
Then comes along a guy and I tell him I need some food or something(I'm fully naked) and he says "Sure, follow me". While following him I then proceed to pull out my pistol and kill him.
All of that could have been avoided if he could actually see that I had a weapon.
bump to keep the idea going
People complaining about KOS need to stop. This crap is going to ruin the game.
Honestly if you find yourself getting killed naked all the time you need to play smarter. Seriously it's not the game, it's you.
So many people are so used to having their hands held in other games that when they play a game where you need to be cautious and think a little bit they go full retard. I only hope that these idiots don't ruin yet another game .

I agree 110%, the dev's have given us the best thing they could give us. A fun open sandbox game where the player gets to make the decision on how they want to play. I beg that the dev's don't take this away by enforcing built in rules or systems. The hand holding stops here.
When I first started playing Rust I was on a very populated server 50-70 people at any given time, it took me 5 tries before I got a base up and found a spot where I wouldn't be hunted down, but this is part of the fun / excitement. Even now when I login early in the mornings when the population is lower I'm always paranoid that someone is sneaking up on me :P Also the i've never had PVP adrenaline rushes like Rust gives.

I don't see how is this a bad mechanic for the game. Two gangs fighing while you are naked, hungry and desperate watching from cover. Someone's laying dead, i should be able to run, jump, do a roll, pick up the gun praying some bullets left in the mag and either leg it or shoot some wounded.
This would give nakeds bit of boost and kevlar gangs will have something else to worry about while pew pewing. Even large gangs should be aware in mid firefight that there are others on server who can and will take advantage you being distracted. Otherwise it's a plain boring Team deathmatch between two gangs. Winning gang takes all the goodies.
If I understand correctly, You have 10 seconds to loot a body?
If I understand correctly, You have 10 seconds to loot a body?
No sorry let me clarify, when you press E on the backpack to loot it, it would take 5-10 seconds to open it as long as you stay in range of the backpack. Once opened its loot-a-hoy

I don't think people care so much about noobs grabbing a fallen comrades gun and jumping into the fight, I think its more of a problem in big raids, as people will drop sleeping bags near the base so they can spawn right back into the action. Or when people have beds really close they can spawn and run naked trying to grab a gun and get back into the fight asap without any risk of loosing new gear.
I agree with you and don't think anything needs to be done about this but it has come up a few times on the forums as concerns of people.
I think the timer to "rummage" through the back pack is absolutely brilliant! Keeps everyone on an even playing field, fully negating the rich vs poor syndrome that everyone whines about.
Also got to give props to the gun showing idea, my buddies and I have discussed this very thing many times. maybe not as obtrusive as giving away what weapon is in inventory, more an ammo belt of sorts across the chest, not ammo specific of course.
But in all honesty I have the feeling that these awesome idea's will be falling on deaf ears/swept under the rug.
How about a bit of compromise - some games have it, like Metro. There is a body/pack to search but whatever player was holding in his hands when killed drops separately. Say M4 welding kevlar got shot - I should be able to pick up the gun quite easily off the floor where he dropped it. Pulling armor off a dead body is tricky or ramaging through the back to find ammo would also take longer.
Any thoughts? :)

Yeah one of the guys that commented gave a good idea. The only weapons that would show on the model would be stuff in your hot bar so you could still "hide" weapons if you want
Also I like the idea of a holster being showed if you have a hand gun on your hot bar, but if you have cloths on it would conceal the holster to allow some form of surprise still. Or add another form of armor like leather(Conseal) which allows you to hide the hand gun. However I don't think anything should conceal a shotgun,mp5a, bolt action, or m4 :P These should show as something slung over your shoulder if not in your hands.

I made an account on the forum just to tell you what an amazing idea that was. Hearing we were moving to locked backpacks made me think of the very first time I played, where I saw 2 bandits in a firefight and after one had won I thought, "he hasn't seen me... he has his back to me... I can do this" I left with so much I felt like it was Christmas times a billion. Then when I died from raiding bandits and lost my new stuff my heart sank to my feet.
So hearing that newbies weren't going to have a similar experience was disappointing, but you nailed it. Ya it does take time to rummage through a backpack, but dropped guns only take a second to pick up. I think this solution keeps everyone happy.

I could get on board with this, anything but locked back packs :P
You could even do it this way:
Guns or anything in the hotbar can be picked up quickly, while armor would take a few seconds. So when you open a backpack it would have 2 screens, the stuff you can quickly grab, and the stuff that takes time. The stuff that takes time when you drag it into your inventory a crafting % bar shows up with how much time is left till you get it. Things like helmets and boots could be like 2-3 seconds because they are easy, but pants and vests would take 5-10, as they take longer to pull off a dead body.
Just some thought, keep it coming, any constructive criticism is good. I would really like this post to get up in numbers so the devs take a look at it and see there is other/better options out there.

I honestly think that for the next update they should implement your idea. The locked backpacks thing is terrible and I honestly think is going to be 99% bad, BUT it looks like their going to add it no matter what we think. However I do think that it's possible to talk them into putting dropped hotbar items in addition to locked backpacks.
If I was a noob and got to pick up a shotgun some bandit dropped I'd have the exact same rush I did back then, and the bandit's happy because he doesn't get his p250, m4 and godlike supplies stolen to boot.
Everyone wins
up we go

Maybe a good way of doing the Metro style system would be all of the items in their hotbar would appear on their corpse. Their held weapon would fall on the ground, any other weapons would be holstered, torches would be on the side, bandages/medkits would be on their jackets. Materials would be in a visible rucksack.
the idea with gunholster is pretty good, but locked backpacks or even the timer should completely being removed...
